Nakibembe Embaire Group, a regular at Uganda's Nyege Nyege Fes, visits Japan for the first time

Nakibembe Embaire Group, also known for their releases from the Ugandan label Nyege Nyege Tapes, will be performing in Japan at Daikanyama UNIT in Tokyo on Tuesday, August 20th.

In the small village of Nakibembe in the Kingdom of Busoga (one of four surviving constitutional monarchies), a giant xylophone called an ember lies at the center of a traditional communal space for musical performances and social events. Log xylophones are common in East Africa, but the music played by the Basoga people, an eastern Bantu people, is unique, with its own tunings and dances. Up to eight players play simultaneously around the ember, layering hypnotic polyrhythms and adding vocals, shakers and drums to the ensemble. The Nakibembe Embaire Group is one of the last groups still able to play with the ember.

This will be the first precious performance of Nakibembe Embaire Group in Japan, and local act CHO CO PA CO CHO CO QUIN QUIN, whose band name comes from the rhythm of Cuban folk song, will perform. Naoyuki Uchida, a dub engineer representing Japan in recording and live performances, will also participate as PA. It looks like a magical rhythmic chemistry will be created for one night only in midsummer Tokyo.

This performance is hosted by FRUE, who will be holding FESTIVAL FRUEZINHO 2024 at Tachikawa Stage Garden in Tokyo on Saturday, July 6th.
