DJ/producer Seimei released his new EP “Tokyo Funky Breaks” today, Wednesday June 26th.
Seimei is one of the founding members of TREKKIE TRAX and has DJed in countries around the world, including the United States, China, and Korea, and has organized his own label nights and performed at large festivals such as OUTLOOK FESTIVAL JAPAN LAUNCH PARTY and EDC Japan.
This album, released by the NY-based label Sorry Records, is a collection of breakbeat tracks based on the theme of Shinjuku, one of his bases as a DJ. The tracks have already been premiered in major overseas media outlets such as DJ Mag and Mixmag, and are generating a lot of buzz.
The remixers include Seimei’s younger brother Carpainter, co-founder of TREKKIE TRAX, and Baltimore-born, New York-based DJ/producer JIALING. The artwork was created as a collage of photos taken by Seimei himself with a film camera by New York artist Jean Pierre. The mastering was done by Oyubi, a Tokyo-based artist who has also released on TREKKIE TRAX.
[Seimei Comment]
Last year, I had the opportunity to DJ at venues and radio stations in New York, including The Lot Radio. I met Nick Boyd, the founder of Sorry Records, and sent him a demo. He decided to release it, and since Sorry Records is one of my favorite labels, I’m very happy that it was released.
This work, which is themed around Shinjuku, is in a sense as noisy as people imagine it to be, but I aimed to reflect the raw energy of the people in the place.
With the increase in inbound tourism, the media often portrays Tokyo as it appears from an overseas perspective, so we, the people who work locally, would be honored if we are able to convey the Tokyo we see as it is.
