Crab Research Group releases new song “Midsummer Crab Kammer” today, featuring crab sticks as the main character

Kani Kenkyukai released their new single “Manatsu no Kanikama” today, Wednesday, July 10th.

The Crab Research Group’s single “I Love You – Shanghai Crab” released in 2022 has been viewed a total of 3 billion times on China’s TikTok, making it a viral hit. This is their first new song in about two months since the release of “Kakushi Kidoutai” in May, and it features an unusual selection of crab sticks as the main character. The pop story depicts how the rising star crab stick (≠ crab) suddenly appears in the crab community and captivates everyone with his soft and chewy body.

The way in which instant, attractive substitutes surpass the real thing, which is out of reach, can be seen as a satire of modern society, but Kani Kenkyukai’s characteristic funny cuteness makes it a cute summer tune that doesn’t feel like it has a sharp theme.

The mermaid-like chorus work is impressive, but the guitar riffs played by Kani Kenkyukai also remind me of a southern island, and when they blend with the vocals, they create a chemical reaction like a fizzy cider. The mix, mastering and cover artwork were done by Kani Kenkyukai themselves.
