As anticipation grows for her Japan tour in October, Jorja Smith releases gorgeous new song “High”

Jorja Smith, a British singer-songwriter whose album “Falling or Flying” released last year is currently a long-running hit, has announced her gorgeous new song “High.” Produced by her long-time collaborator DAMEDAME*, the smooth house beat is a memorable summer track.

Regarding the song, Jorja says, “I wrote this song about finding friends within yourself. Even when you’re at rock bottom, it’s important to always keep looking up.”

“You weren’t always there for me when I felt at my lowest. But time heals, and now I can love myself again,” she sings loudly.

The single was released with a visualiser that compiles Jorja’s personal footage and fan submissions. Collected through a social media call in March, the footage spotlights people partying, celebrating and living life to the fullest. The footage was produced and directed by Jorja and Ivor Lawson-Adamah.

The album “Falling or Flying” released last year is a magnificent work that combines beautifully shining R&B with sharp alternative elements. It contains the process of Jorja overcoming difficulties, growing, loving and respecting herself, and taking a new step, even though her emotions were sometimes intense. It was met with rave reviews immediately after its release. The following year, it was nominated for the “Best R&B” category at the Brit Awards.

Jorja Smith “Falling or flying”

She currently holds the most commanding presence of any of the many British singers working in music, writing songs with an intensity and urgency that is unmatched. In the six years since the release of her acclaimed debut album, Lost & Found, she has won praise worldwide for her evocative songwriting, powerful vocals, purity of emotion and the unbridled flair of a young woman navigating life.

But the past few years and her transition into her mid-twenties have been introspective and transformative, as she’s stepped into herself despite the ever-changing musical landscape, allowing her to evolve as a songwriter and a woman.

Jorja Smith reminds herself and her listeners that she is in control of her emotions, whether things are going well or not.

In October they will perform in Japan for the first time in six years!

Jorja Smith

Jorja Smith is one of the most brilliant and emotionally charged British musicians working in music today. In the five and a half years since the release of her critically acclaimed debut album, Lost & Found, she has been celebrated worldwide for her evocative songwriting, powerful vocals, pure emotion, and the supple, resilient sense of a young woman navigating life. But in 2021, she announced a break from music. Her previous album, Be Right Back, was the bridge between the sensation of her debut and her next project. Born from playing, jamming, freestyling, and making sounds of things that Jorja had been trying to express for a long time, Be Right Back was a project entirely for her fans. “It was what I wanted, and it was also like a little waiting room with my fans, so I think people knew I was coming back to the scene one day.”

As she said, she has returned to the scene. The album “Falling or Flying” has become a wonderfully attractive work that will attract not only past listeners but also those who have just heard her music. What has changed for her in the five years since the release of her debut album?

“I accept everything that has happened to me and I like the environment I’ve been given. This is the first time I’ve been able to reveal my true self.”

The past few years have been introspective and transformative for her, as she transitions into her mid-twenties. She has been able to step into herself and evolve as a songwriter and a woman despite the ever-changing music landscape. With the pandemic having completely devastated the world, she says the time given her to deeply understand herself has given her control over how she channels that into her music.

Like the legendary musicians who have appeared before her, Jorja now looks at the chaos and disorder of the world with a sophisticated and resourceful eye, and seeks to discover and express the bright future that emerges from it.

At just 25 years old, Jorja Smith, the gorgeous-voiced, sharp-tongued British singer-songwriter, has been on a roll for nearly a decade. Originally from Walsall in the West Midlands, Smith has had astounding collaborations with global stars such as Kendrick Lamar, Drake, Stormzy, Burna Boy, Kali Uchis and Popcaan. In 2018, she became the first independent artist to win the coveted BRITs Critics’ Choice Award. Her debut album, Lost & Found, was released to rave reviews that same year, and was nominated for the Mercury Prize, as well as winning the BRIT Award for Best British Female Artist in 2019. She was also nominated for a Grammy Award for Best New Artist that same year.

But beneath the surface of her success, Jorja has found herself feeling intimidated by it all, the more public she is. Her long-awaited second full-length album is titled Falling or Flying. The record is a snapshot of a young woman growing up, confidently stepping into her own light, making music entirely on her own terms, in the face of the swirling wheels of uncertainty. Working with fellow Walsall production duo DAMEDAME*, the album is sonic epic. There are polished, lustrous R&B, vibrant, sizzling UK funk and sizzling, fresh alternative elements sprinkled throughout. Her lyrics explore relationships – friendship, love, the press, the music industry – but the main focus is on her own personalities.

“I’ve gotten better at believing in myself, doubting myself less, and being less affected and worried by other people’s opinions,” she explains with a smile. “I often find myself writing songs about someone else, only to find I’m actually writing about myself. Sometimes I feel like I make these songs exist just for me.” Through Falling or Flying, Jorja Smith reminds herself (and us) that whether things are going up or down, she is in full control. In fact, she’s growing, staying true to herself, and taking success into her own hands.
