The official visual and trailer for the film “Maru,” in which Domoto Tsuyoshi makes his long-awaited first starring role in a film in 27 years since “The Kindaichi Case Files: Shanghai Fishman Legend” which was released in 1997, have been released.
The visual is striking, showing Sawada, played by Tsuyoshi Domoto, completely wrapped up in a large circle, as if to suggest that he is gradually becoming obsessed with the circle. Surrounding him are Go Ayano as Yokoyama, an unsuccessful manga artist who lives next door to Sawada, Riho Yoshioka as Yajima, who also works as an assistant to a contemporary artist like Sawada, Win Morisaki as Mo, a convenience store clerk, and Satomi Kobayashi as Moeko, an ambitious gallery owner, all curled up and gazing at the viewer.
Following on from the teaser visuals, designer Oshima Itia was responsible for the visual, which has a mysterious, floating feel to it, as if it could start spinning around at any moment.
The trailer, which was also released at the same time, begins with the main character, Sawada, having a bicycle accident on a rainy hill and injuring his right arm, which is his tool of trade. Unable to draw anymore, Sawada starts working part-time at the convenience store where Mo works, and as if guided by an ant, draws a circle… Suddenly, a suspicious art dealer named Tsuchiya shows up and declares, “I’ll offer you 1 million yen for each piece.”
While Sawada is confused by this sudden turn of events, the “Sawada” mark spreads unnoticed and eventually becomes a social phenomenon. Sawada, who suddenly becomes known to everyone, gradually becomes obsessed with the mark. At the same time, counterfeit “Sawada” images also appear in large numbers…
Where on earth will this fantastical story lead? This is a must-see, packed to the brim with the mysterious charm of this work.
