An event celebrating the 50th anniversary of J Dilla’s birth, “THANK YOU, JAMES: Celebrating 50 Years of J-DILLA”, will be held in Shanghai, Tokyo and Osaka in September this year.
J Dilla gained attention in the mid-90s for his work with artists such as Pharcyde, Busta Rhymes, and De La Soul, and later joined The Ummah and The Soulquarians to work with such notable artists as A Tribe Called Quest, The Roots, D’Angelo, Common, and Erykah Badu. His unique beat sense has led him to create new hip-hop sounds, and he has produced great works as a producer and rapper with his own group Slum Village and his unit with Madlib, Jaylib, as well as solo. In addition, J Dilla’s solo album “Donuts” (2006), released three days before his death, has influenced many artists as the greatest instrumental hip-hop album in hip-hop history, and his legacy is widely inherited in the global music scene.
“THANK YOU, JAMES: Celebrating 50 Years of J-DILLA” will feature hip-hop duo Frank N Dank, an artist from Detroit who is the same hometown as J Dilla and can be said to be his ally, and Illa J, J Dilla’s younger brother. In addition to these two groups who inherit J Dilla’s DNA, BUDAMUNK, 5lack, ISSUGI, and other artists from Japan who were influenced by J Dilla’s sound in real time, as well as new generation artists who continue the flow, will also be performing. It looks like it will be an event that will celebrate J Dilla’s 50th birthday in a big way, while expressing the connection between J Dilla and the hip-hop scene in Japan (and China) on stage.
