Tsuyoshi Kusanagi (the official spelling of “Nagi” is the kanji for “bow” with the character for “front” and “sword”) will be the narrator for the special drama “Kin-chan’s Sumi-chan: The Woman Who Loved Hagimoto Kinichi,” which will be broadcast as part of “24 Hour TV 47” on Nippon TV from 6:30 p.m. on August 31st.
This work is a dramatization of the little-known story of the marriage between the extraordinary comedian Hagimoto Kinichi, who started out in a theater in Asakusa and became a national star, and his wife Sumi-chan, who continued to support him behind the scenes, with rare footage.
In addition to the main drama in which Atsushi Ito and Haru play Kin-chan and Sumi-chan respectively, another highlight is the exquisite documentary edition which incorporates rare footage.
Kinchan, who until now has rarely spoken about his wife even to those close to him, features never-before-seen close-up footage, including an interview in which he looks back on his memories with Sumi-chan, as well as a number of legendary footage that have rewritten the history of Japanese entertainment, including the first broadcast of “24 Hour TV,” on which Kinchan served as the first general host.
Kusanagi will be the narrator of this precious documentary. Kusanagi’s first TV appearance was on Kin-chan’s show “Kin Kirarin 530!!” broadcast on Nippon Television in 1988, when he was 13 years old. He says that being selected through an audition and being given direct training by Kin-chan, Japan’s proud comedian, has become a great asset for Kusanagi.
Another topic of discussion is that Katori Shingo plays Kin-chan’s manager in the drama. Both Kusanagi and Katori were mentored by Kin-chan when they were young and starting out in show business, so it’s a coincidence that they end up starring in this drama that depicts Kin-chan’s life.
“Kin-chan and Sumi-chan: The women who loved Hagimoto Kinichi” will air from around 9 p.m. on August 31st.
