Kyoto-born beatmaker Phennel Koliander released his new album, “Stagger Riddim EP,” today, Thursday, August 29th.
Phennel Koliander is the elder brother of Japan’s leading beat media “Table Beats” and belongs to the music label “EPISTROPH” which has WONK. This work adopts the “one-way” style of reggae culture, where various artists sing on the same track. Rappers/singers Kojoe and Daichi Yamamoto, and R&B/soul-based SSW ZIN participate. The track, named “Stagger Riddim”, is addictive with its melancholic taste, high-level jokes and heavy drum swaying, and the three artists’ different approaches shine.
Phennel Koliander says, “As I was putting together the beats for this album, I wanted the nuances of neo-soul R&B, and when I thought about who was the most expressive, I naturally decided to ask these three people who have connections in various ways.” How do each lyric and vocal bridge and move on top of the heavy, twisted beat? It’s a work full of things to listen to.
