An official live report from the Tokyo performance of singer-songwriter Abe Mao’s solo tour “15th Anniversary Abe Mao Solo Live Tour 2024,” which she held as part of her 15th anniversary year, has arrived, as well as live photos from various locations on the tour.
The solo tour “15th Anniversary Abe Mao Solo Live Tour 2024” was held in four locations nationwide from August 25 to September 15, where Abe Mao performed at rare venues such as Kaburenjo, movie theaters, small theaters, and Noh theaters, performing her original guitar and singing style. We will bring you a report on the performance at Aimasho in Tokyo on August 30th from the tour, which ended with all performances being sold out.
The “15th Anniversary Abe Mao Solo Live Tour 2024” will take her to movie theaters, small theaters, Noh theaters, and Kaburenjo theaters across the country. On this tour, which marks the start of her 15th anniversary since her debut, Abe Mao has once again demonstrated her appeal as a singer-songwriter.
The second day of the tour (August 30th) was the Tokyo Aimasho performance. Mao Abe appeared in white pants and a black T-shirt, waving to the audience and communicating with them with a smile.
When she greeted the audience with “Good evening everyone, I’m Abe Mao!”, a voice said, “Shall we stand up?” When she replied, “Yeah, maybe we should stand up,” the audience stood up and went straight into the first song, “Lonely.” During the final chorus, she asked, “Can we hear your voice?” and the audience started singing along.
“I’ll play a slightly nostalgic song,” she said, introducing “Yasashii Kotoba” from her sixth album, “Oppajime!” The guitar arrangement with fewer notes conveyed the beauty of the song and the depth of the lyrics. It’s been about five years since she last toured with her guitar, but Mao Abe’s acoustic singing is still exceptional.
“I’m thinking of doing some nostalgic songs on this tour. I wonder if the next song will be nostalgic too,” the MC said, leading to “Where Did It Go?”. Along with the intense guitar strokes, the line “My love will kill everyone” resounded. An even more powerful fake-out started with “Deadline,” a track from the debut album “Free.” I think being able to experience the early songs again was one of the best parts of this acoustic tour.
From here, she sat down on a chair and sang. First, she performed “Aitaiyo” (I want to see you), saying, “The next song is one I wrote when I was a high school student living in Oita Prefecture.” The next song, “Maybe,” is a song with lyrics entirely in English that is included in her latest album, “NOW.” “Maybe,” which was delivered with the words, “I wonder why I cry every night even though I should be doing pretty well? I’m sure everyone has times like that,” was one of the highlights of the live performance that day.
She talked about how she had a part-time job as a shrine maiden in high school, and there was something like a “shrine maiden community” there… and then she sang “Shy Song – I’d be happy if you could relate to it”, which is also from her first album “Free”. Along with fresh guitar strokes, she sang a song that was imprinted with the reality of the teenage Abe Mao.
Furthermore, in the middle of the song, the lead track of the new album “NOW,” “Somebody Else Now,” she said, “I want to practice singing together for the Tokyo Garden Theater. Can you sing with me?” and everyone joined in chorus, “You’re somebody else, now.” The second half of the concert started with “Poker Face,” which has an endearing chorus that says, “May your honest heart shine especially brightly in front of the one you love.” “I’m Still Alive” resonates with the message that we should move forward by looking for what we can do now, rather than worrying and brooding, and “Believe in myself” hits home with the line, “What’s important is whether you can accept yourself in the end.” Yes, songs with positive messages are also a big part of Abe Mao’s appeal.
The final song of the main part was “If We Meet Again Somewhere,” which is included in the album “NOW.”
“There are a lot of songs about parting on this album, ‘NOW.’ I wrote these songs hoping that we would be able to laugh together again, because I once fell in love with them.” The song, performed with these words, must have left a deep impression on the hearts of each and every audience member.
The concert came to a close with an encore of “Stalker’s Song – 3rd Street, Your House” and “Mother’s Song.”
The “15th Anniversary Abe Mao Solo Live Tour 2024” toured Kyoto Pontocho Kaburenjo (August 25th), Tokyo Aimasho (August 30th), Aichi Chikusa Bunka Shogekijo (September 13th), and Fukuoka Ohori Park Noh Theater (September 15th). In October, the “15th Anniversary Abe Mao Zepp Live Tour 2024” will be held at five Zepp venues nationwide, and on January 26th, 2025, “Abe Mao Live 2025 -15th ANNIVERSARY- @ Tokyo Garden Theater” will be held at Tokyo Garden Theater. We hope you will experience the many stages that will color the anniversary year and the “now” Abe Mao in her 15th anniversary.
