The latest edition of Tower Records’ “NO MUSIC, NO LIFE.” opinion advertisement series features the legendary rock guitarist Makoto Ayukawa. This poster, created to mark the release of the compilation album “VINTAGE VIOLENCE – Makoto Ayukawa GUITAR WORKS,” a collection of songs he has participated in, focusing mainly on guitar playing, on Wednesday, October 2nd, will be displayed in all Tower Records and TOWER RECORDS mini stores from Friday, September 27th.

Makoto Ayukawa previously appeared on a poster as “SHEENA & THE ROKKETS” in March 2015, and also on a poster produced to commemorate the “NO MUSIC, NO LIFE.” EXHIBITION in HAKATA” held at AMU Plaza Hakata in November 2015, but this will be his first time appearing solo on a “NO MUSIC, NO LIFE.” poster.

The album “VINTAGE VIOLENCE ~ Makoto Ayukawa GUITAR WORKS” is a project album commemorating the first anniversary of Makoto Ayukawa’s death (he passed away on January 29, 2023), and is the first project album to compile Makoto Ayukawa’s guitar playing across the boundaries of labels, focusing on his solo works, and is collected on two CDs. It includes not only Makoto Ayukawa’s solo works, but also representative songs by Sun House, YMO, and The Rockets, and is a collection of his best works, including seven tracks that are being released on CD for the first time.

[Profile of Makoto Ayukawa]

Born in Kurume, Fukuoka Prefecture in 1948. Band leader and guitarist of “Sheena & the Rockets.”

From 1970 to 1978, he worked as the lead guitarist and composer for the Fukuoka-based band “Sunhouse”, and then formed Sheena & The Rockets in 1978. They debuted with “Tears Highway”, and “You May Dream” became a big hit. They performed live with Elvis Costello and the Ramones, and in 1981 made their US debut with the album “Sheena & The Rockets”. They also promoted Sheena & The Rockets as a production group through the launch of their own production company, which was groundbreaking at the time, and embarked on a variety of activities. Among these, under Ayukawa’s guideline of “Rock is live. Compete with sound!”, they continue to focus on live acts with uncompromising staging, from arena-class to numerous festivals and live houses. They still have the original members from the time of formation, and their activity history, which is outstanding in both quality and quantity, continues to pursue the possibility of being one of Japan’s leading rock bands, transcending genres. His solo works include “Cool Solo” (Alfa) and the London Session series (SpeedStar). Outside of music, he has appeared in many TV commercials and advertisements as a model, and his unique presence attracts many people. As an actor, he has appeared in the NHK TV drama “Churasan”. He has also appeared in many films, including “Jersey no Futari” (2008/directed by Nakamura Yoshihiro). He also demonstrated a charm that had not been focused on until then, and wrote the film music for “Waruboro” (2007/directed by Sumida Yasushi). He has also written books that make use of his vast knowledge of music and computers, such as “60’s Rock Autobiography”, “200CD Rock ‘n’ Roll”, “We Love the Rolling Stones” (co-written with Yamakawa Kenichi), and “DOSV Blues”.
