The award ceremony for the Taiwanese music awards “Golden Indie Music Awards” (GIMA), which started in 2010 and will be held for the 15th time this year, will be held on Saturday, November 2nd at Taipei Popular Music Center (Taiwan). It will be held at the Taipei Popular Music Center.

This year’s judging committee chairman is Sam Yang of FireEX. When announcing the nominees, Sam Yang said, “The time to sow the seeds has passed, and the time has come for Taiwanese music to bloom.”

GIMA is a companion award to the Golden Melody Awards (GMA), which is also known as “Taiwan’s Grammy Awards,” and as the name suggests, it focuses on indie music. Recently, it is said that the difference between mainstream and indie music is disappearing. However, Taiwan’s indie scene continues to change in surprising ways over the years, and the number of artists and bands who are active not only in Taiwan but internationally is increasing. GIMA is an awards/music festival that hooks up such new generation artists and also spotlights performers.

How many Taiwanese artists/bands will come to Japan in 2024? There are so many performances in Japan that it’s hard to keep up with the information. Whether you’re hearing Taiwanese music for the first time or looking forward to it every year, this year, don’t worry about anything difficult and check out the world of “Taiwanese indie music” in a comfortable space with an internet connection.

The first thing I want to focus on is the “Best Band Award.” Sorry Youth, a trio that sings in Taiwanese, is called Paise (meaning “I’m sorry” in Taiwanese), Elephant Gym, who just had a successful live performance on Billboard Live YOKOHAMA, 9 Many Japanese bands that are actively holding concerts in Japan have been nominated, including I’m Difficult, who just held a live show in Japan this month. Other Taiwanese bands you should check out include Plutato, a piano, percussion, and saxophone trio, Wayne’ So Sad, and Bremen Entertainment Inc.

Also, don’t miss the “Best Asian Creative Artist Award,” which is selected from works from Asian countries other than Taiwan. This time, 79 works were submitted, the most ever.The nominees from Japan are LITE, a math rock band that is active not only in Japan but also in Asia, and punk band, known as Rock Monster. 2 sets from Age Factory.

From outside Japan, there will be Silica Gel, a popular Korean band who performed at last year’s BiKN Shibuya and also performed in Japan in June this year, Virgin Vacation, an experimental instrumental band from Hong Kong, and Beijing. NaraBara, who is originally from Japan, fuses jazz and Mongolian folk, and Yeoian, a Chinese SSW, are also interesting. Furthermore, in the 13th edition (2022), the same award was won by Japan’s Mickey Yoshino, which caused a stir in Japan as well.

Additionally, hip-hop is hot at GIMA this year. The hip-hop unit Yorigatsu (Wannasleep & GummyB), who has been nominated for the “Best Hip-hop Album Award”, and Korean rapper SINCE. You can’t miss the performance of these two groups.

Also worth remembering is Taiwanese rapper Chen Hsien-ching, known for his hit song “輕輕”. And of course, keep an eye out for Tatsuya Kitani, who is appearing from Japan and is visiting Taiwan for the first time.

By the way, Wannasleep, which is available only at night, is from Taiwan’s Chengchi University’s Black Ren Music Company. Gummy B, who won the “Best Live Performance Award” and “Best Hip-hop Song Award” (“Dunhua South Road Revisit”) at last year’s GIMA, is a graduate of the Changha Cultural Institute of Taiwan University. This year’s Taiwanese hip-hop artists may be a lot of intellectuals, as Chen Yingling is also from Black Music Company.

The one you should check out for this year’s “Best Hip-hop Song” award is Taiwan rap handsome man, a Taiwanese rapper from Tainan who won the title with “The Rappers 2.” The album “SIM” released in February was nominated for the “Best Album Award”, as well as the “Best Singer-songwriter Award”, “Best New Artist Award”, and “Best Hip-hop Album Award”. The fact that he was selected shows the high level of attention he has received.

This year, the award ceremony will also be broadcast simultaneously on Space Shower TV’s YouTube channel, limited to Japan. In addition to a Japanese interpreter, guest artists Chelmico and Hibiki Takahashi (Cody/Lee) will appear during the stream. Yukako Yajima will be the MC, and Buddha Terao will be the commentator.
