■“I felt that there was something alive and vibrant that I could relate to even in this day and age.” (Masaki Aiba)
The stage play “Goodbye, Lenin!” starring Masaki Aiba ‘ has been decided to be performed. The film is a stage adaptation of a German film that was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
Movie “Goodbye, Lenin!” ‘ is a masterpiece that was released in Germany in 2003 and was a huge hit, attracting more than 6 million people in its home country alone. It won numerous German and international film awards, was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film, and is said to be one of the most successful German films of recent decades.
Although the stage version was created by Bernd Lichtenberg himself, who wrote the screenplay for the movie, it also incorporates features unique to theater that are not found in the movie. More than 30 years have passed since East and West Germany were unified, and the memory of East Germany is fading even within Germany. However, we have created a book that focuses on the political background of the country so that both the generation that does not know about East Germany and the generation that misses that era can relate to it. It was first released in 2021 as a universal and heartwarming theatrical piece about family that also incorporates comedic elements.
This work, starring Masaki Aiba, will premiere in Japan in the spring of 2025. The production will be directed by Satoshi Uemura, a leading Japanese theater director who is making his first appearance at the PARCO Theater.
Masaki Aiba will celebrate the 25th anniversary of his debut as Arashi in 2024, and currently, in addition to being active on TV as the MC of variety shows, he has continued to actively work as an actor in video works such as dramas and movies in recent years, and in 2022 He is also enthusiastic about performing on stage, appearing on stage for the first time in 12 years in “Welcome, Minato Sensei” and taking on the challenge of performing in a music reading drama in 2024 with “THANATOS”. Comments from Masaki Aiba regarding this work have also arrived.
■Masaki Aiba comment
Although the story is based on events that took place several decades ago, when I read the script, I felt that the depiction of people who are at the mercy of the times, and the warm heart they feel for their families, still applies to today. I felt that there was something alive and vibrant that I could relate to.
I will dive into the world of the work drawn by Mr. Uemura’s direction and give it my all.
