The Walkmen frontman Hamilton Leithauser has announced that his new album “This Side Of The Island” will be released on March 7th via Glassnote Records. The second single from the album, “Knockin’ Heart,” has been released.
The new album, This Side Of The Island, was co-produced by Leithauser himself, The National’s Aaron Dessner (Taylor Swift, Gracie Abrams), and his wife Anna Stumpf. It is very different from the folk-rock atmosphere of the previous two albums “I Had A Dream That You Were Mine” (2016) and “The Loves Of Your Life” (2020), with a groovier and heavier bass. Shift to a modern sound. In a socially and politically polarized world, he displays his unwavering optimism and poignant humor.
Hamilton Leithauser prefers to create music freely in his home studio “The Struggle Hut” in New York, but after eight years of countless performances, in the spring of 2024, he decided to join his old friend Aaron. They visited Dessner’s Long Pond Studio in upstate New York and finally returned with the album. Known for his work with artists such as The National, Taylor Swift, Gracie Abrams, and many others, Dessner brings an expansive, modern sound and plays different instruments on nearly every track. Their collaboration resulted in an album that is both timeless and contemporary.
Regarding the album’s lead single, “Knockin’ Heart,” Hamilton Leithauser says:
“This song is about an estranged lover walking home high, with a message he’s dying to convey to someone who’s probably not listening: ‘If you’ll forgive me, I’ll love you forever.” I wrote and recorded this song one night and let it sit for over a year. I loved it and didn’t want to mess it up by trying to perfect it. .Arlo When I was with N, it was the last song I played him and the first song he helped me with. He pushed the ceiling higher and deeper sonically. In fact, he uses an interesting bass technique that he used in a Taylor Swift song, and his bass sound is really amazing. The base is used! One was for me and the other was for him. It was a new experience for me.”
