◎BOØWY Profile
BOØWY is a rock band that was active from 1981 to 1988 by Himuro Kyosuke (Vo), Hotei Tomoyasu (G), Matsui Tsunematsu (※) (B), and Takahashi Makoto (Ds). He is a unique and charismatic favorite that has quickly run through Shinjuku Loft, Shibuya Public Hall, Nippon Budokan and Tokyo Dome, and has many followers from artists. He made his record debut in 1982 with the album “MORAL.” He made a big hit in 1986 with his fourth album, “JUST A HERO.” The hit of the single “B・BLUE” released in the same year caused a band boom all over Japan. He has six original albums left.
The symbol “Ø (empty set)” in the band name of BOØWY means “does not belong anywhere, do not want to resemble anyone.” In 1986, Himuro Kyosuke successfully performed at the Nippon Budokan, known for his famous MC “Welcome to the Live House Budokan!”, and established himself as the No. 1 rock band in both name and reality. On December 24, 1987, at the height of popularity, they suddenly announced their disbandment at Shibuya Public Hall. The final stage was “LAST GIGS” held at Tokyo Dome, which was just completed on April 4th and 5th, 1988. Its popularity became a social phenomenon, with ticket purchases causing telephone lines to be flattened. Their first best album, THIS BOØWY, released in 1998, has sold over 2.2 million copies despite being 10 years since their disbandment. The band has continued to cause the BOØWY phenomenon many times, including experiencing sales incredible ways without the band being present.
(※Current artist name is Matsui Tsunematsu)
