Spotify promotes equal opportunities for women in the music and audio fields, and develops a global program called “EQUAL” to celebrate the success and contributions of female artists and creators, and introduces their works to listeners around the world through playlists, podcasts, and marketing activities. Along with EQUAL, a global flagship playlist that introduces works by popular female artists, they also have local playlists in 35 countries and regions. EQUAL Japan, which is available in Japan, has picked up popular female artists as ambassadors and used them in cover images and campaigns.
In Japan, it has also collaborated with Billboard JAPAN to develop a playlist called “Top Japan Hits by Women,” which collects only songs from the domestic music chart “Billboard JAPAN Hot 100.” It encourages female artists to further advance.
[Ashizawa Noriko (Spotify Japan Music Planning Promotion Management) Comment]
Since 2021, Spotify has been supporting female artists and creators through a variety of initiatives, including EQUAL, to promote gender equity in music. The proportion of female artists in the country’s top 100 annual artist charts increased by 4% from 2023 to 2024, with the total number of views of female artists in the charts also growing by 27%. We will continue to work further to deliver the works of female artists and creators to more people throughout the year.
