Ryota Katayose (GENERATIONS) visits the atelier of Wataru Ozu, an artist who continues to draw apples! Learn about how past experiences led to his current style

On the art program “MEET YOUR ART”, the series[THE BASE]in which Ryota Katayose (GENERETIONS) visits artists’ ateliers and studios was released.

This time, we visited the atelier of Wataru Ozu, an artist who continues to draw apples.

Ozu says that apples are a common language, so why does he keep drawing the same motif? !

In addition to exploring the creative process of reconsidering and presenting a painting once a theme, Katayose delves into the circumstances that led to his current style.

OZU Wataru Born in 1991. Majored in oil painting at Tokyo University of the Arts and graduated from the same graduate school. Ozu’s works are characterized by bright watercolor-like colors and light brushstrokes, and are also characterized by the use of “ma” within the painting to control the painting space. Since childhood, he has been familiar with Japanese art such as Yamato-e and Rimpa, as well as classical Western paintings, and these influences are deeply rooted in his creative activities. He creates oil paintings while referencing motifs from Eastern art such as landscape paintings and ukiyo-e, as well as from Western art. In recent years, he has focused on the distance between the artist and the motif and the setting of the painting space, which can be seen in the open oriental painting space, through the basic themes of painting such as “still life painting,” “landscape painting,” and “portrait painting.” I am working on productions that reconsider these elements.
