commmons is a project established in 2006 by artists including Ryuichi Sakamoto to explore new possibilities in music, together with the Avex Group. 17 years have passed since the label was established, and this is the first time the logo has been renewed.
The label, with the motto of “think global, act local,” has been carrying out various activities with the aim of becoming a “commons” for building better relationships between artists/creators, the music industry, and users/listeners as a new music community with an ecological perspective that aims to contribute to society and culture. The label’s name, “commmons,” is composed of three “m’s,” in the hope that music will continue to exist at the center of the commons.
Since its establishment in 2006, ahead of the era of SDGs, the company has been committed to environmental protection activities, promoting carbon offsetting of packaging and product packaging that uses as little plastic as possible.
Along with Ryuichi Sakamoto’s last wishes, commmons’ philosophy remains unchanged, and they envision a future where music will expand as a shared space. We look forward to seeing their future activities.
▼Commmons statement
About future commmons.
Commmons is a label that Ryuichi Sakamoto launched in 2006 with the help of Avex, calling itself a “music commons,” primarily for Japan. Its purpose was to provide a platform for him to freely create music, as well as a tool and resource for individual musicians to release and sell their work. Although it never achieved its purpose in a satisfactory way, I believe it has gained a certain degree of recognition as Ryuichi Sakamoto’s home in Japan.
Well, here we go.
Now that Ryuichi Sakamoto has left this world, what can we do?
To protect, preserve and pass on the works left behind by Ryuichi Sakamoto.
To learn about Ryuichi Sakamoto’s thoughts on music from his words and to create opportunities for new music to be born.
With this in mind, I am determined to walk with Ryuichi Sakamoto with renewed vigor.
We created a new logo to express this intention.
“In the commons there is ‘m’ (music)”
I hope you will continue to watch over us in the future.
In commemoration of the release of the movie “Opus”, a campaign for old commmons records has been decided. As a bonus, commmons stickers with the new logo will be given away. For details, please check the official website and SNS.

TREES FOR SAKAMOTO:
About More Trees General Incorporated Association
Based on the concept of “more trees,” this forest conservation organization was founded by Ryuichi Sakamoto, with over 100 supporters from around the world who agreed with his call.
He works with local governments and people to promote forest regeneration both in Japan and overseas, and is working to make sustainable use of the blessings of the forests.
The organization promotes forest creation around the world by initiating various forest-related projects under the theme of “connecting cities and forests,” such as increasing the ability of forests to absorb CO2 (carbon dioxide), popularizing “carbon offsets,” and developing original products using the blessings of forests.
