The opening performance of the reading drama “Detective Galileo”, based on Keigo Higashino’s best-selling novel of the same name, was held today, May 18th (Sat) at EBiS303. This performance will feature Takuya Eguchi, who plays Manabu Yukawa, a physicist known as the genius scientist “Galileo,” and Shunpei Kusanagi, a detective from the First Investigative Division who brings Yukawa to Yukawa with a difficult case. Sougo Nakamura, who plays the character, took to the stage and passionately performed the masterpiece mystery drawn by Keigo Higashino.
When the curtain rose, Yukawa (Takuya Eguchi) in a white coat and Kusanagi (Sogo Nakamura) in a suit appeared on stage. The story of Chapter 1, “Burning,” begins with Kusanagi coming to Yukawa to ask for his help in solving the burning incident that has caused a stir in the world. The story takes place in a quiet residential area, where a mysterious incident occurs in which one of the young men who was hanging out on a bench at a bus stop suddenly catches fire in his head and burns to death. Was it intentional or an accident? If it was intentional, how was it used and what led to the young man’s death? Kusanagi tells Yukawa the outline of the incident in order to find a clue to the solution. The venue is filled with a serious atmosphere, filled with anxiety over the mysterious incident. Near the crime scene, Yukawa and Kusanagi encounter a girl who claims to have seen a “red thread.” Furthermore, Yukawa pays attention to a young man with a speech impediment, Kazuyuki Maejima (Yamajin Igarashi). The audience holds their breath as they listen to the precise and daring tricks that make full use of technology and the outcome of the incident.
The second chapter, “Transcription,” began next. While visiting his niece’s school’s cultural festival, Kusanagi comes across a strange “death mask”. As he looks at the mask, which is labeled as “Zombie Death Mask” and somehow reminds him of a dead person, a woman named[Kakimoto Ryoko](Yamaichi Maki) appears with a desperate look on his face. When asked about the situation, she says that the face of the “zombie death mask” looks exactly like her missing brother, Shinichi… Later, the body of Shinichi Kakimoto is discovered near a pond where the mask mold was found, and Kusanagi visits Yukawa again, finding the incident puzzling. Why and how were elaborate masks imitating the faces of dead people made? While leaving the mystery unsolved, Kusanagi continues to interview Shinichi’s wife,[Kakimoto Masayo](Shigeda Kiko), and Shinichi’s acquaintance[Sasaoka Hirohisa](Sekiguchi Koto), but…
The audience was captivated by Yukawa’s intellect as he vividly solved the seemingly supernatural case. The tension in the venue was lifted, and the lights were turned on, marking the end of the main story of the reading drama “Detective Galileo.”
After the main program ended, the two appeared on stage again and the after-talk began. The after-talk, which began in a light-hearted atmosphere in stark contrast to the main program, also included a talk about the episode when the cast was decided. “I thought that I would finally get the role of Yukawa in ‘Detective Galileo’ after my intelligence was revealed, but it turned out to be Kusanagi,” said Nakamura Shugo with a laugh. Eguchi Takuya, who played Yukawa, responded by quoting a famous line from the drama version, saying, “When I heard that Shugo would be playing Kusanagi, I thought it was interesting,” and the audience burst into laughter. Nakamura also looked back on the rehearsals as “fun,” and mentioned Eguchi’s role-making. Nakamura said, “He played two different Yukawas by changing the pattern,” and Eguchi said, “He became the Yukawa he is today by matching his approach to Kusanagi,” showing off their great buddy relationship just like in the drama. Eguchi also looked back on his high school days when he chose physics, saying, “That class shaped the Yukawa we’re playing today,” to which Nakamura immediately retorted, “There’s no connection.” The entire venue erupted in excitement as the after-talk, packed with interesting material, came to a close.
In the final speech, five members of the ensemble cast also took the stage again. After Sougo Nakamura, who plays Shunpei Kusanagi, said, “I’m happy to be able to do a reading based on such a wonderful script, and it will be a memory that will last a lifetime.”After that, Takuya Eguchi, who played Manabu Yukawa, said, “I’m so happy that I was able to do a reading based on such a wonderful script. It was interesting to create a read-aloud play from the beginning of a work that everyone knows.Since it is performed by a double cast, I hope people can feel the contrast,” he concluded the performance.
