“MEET YOUR ART”, an art program hosted by Mirai Moriyama, features Bontaro Dokuyama, a businessman turned artist! He pursues humorous yet sarcastic video works.

“MEET YOUR ART” is an art project centered around art-focused programming, with over 66,000 subscribers on its YouTube channel.

This time, we will be featuring artist Bontaro Dokuyama, who creates works while actually researching problems and phenomena that are becoming increasingly difficult to see in modern society!
We will delve deeper into how he transformed from a salaryman to a contemporary artist after the Great East Japan Earthquake, and the video works that were born from the struggles of the coronavirus pandemic.

Bontaro Dokuyama
He began creating artworks after the Great East Japan Earthquake and the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident on March 11, 2011, completely changed the situation in his hometown of Fukushima. He creates videos and installations by investigating forgotten memories and places from the past, tossed about by the times and social conditions, and problems and phenomena that are becoming less visible in modern society. His works, which are created by visiting the site of a certain event, listening to the voices of those involved, and then intervening in the process himself, present the viewer with the possibility that anyone could become a party to the event at any moment, in this modern age where it is unpredictable what will happen. By confronting the past and examining what remains, or has not been left behind, he sheds light on people’s memories and emotions that have been overlooked by history, as well as realities that may be buried in the future.
