On the 8th, hip-hop artist SEAMO attended the hair-cutting ceremony for former sumo wrestler Chiyonokuni’s stablemaster Sanoyama, held at the Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo, where he passionately performed two songs, “Continue” and “Mata Ai Mashou.”
Chiyonokuni made his debut in the top division at the first tournament of 2012. Since then, he has suffered from a series of injuries to both knees, heels, shoulders and deltoids, but with his indomitable fighting spirit, he has twice managed to return to the top division after falling below the makushita division.
This time, Chiyonokuni said that he was encouraged many times by SEAMO’s “Continue” during his active career, so at his strong request, he was able to participate in the hair-cutting ceremony.
At this hair-cutting ceremony, many celebrities, including SEAMO, cut Chiyonokuni’s topknot.
After the hair-cutting ceremony, SEAMO was introduced as a special guest and appeared in front of the ring to the intro to “Mata Ai Mashou,” before singing passionately to Chiyonokuni, who was sitting in the middle of the ring.
Next, he told the audience at the venue, “This song conveys the importance of continuing,” and sang “Continue” with passion. While singing, Chiyonokuni closed his eyes and listened intently. At the end of the song, the whole venue sang along with loud applause.
After the hair-cutting ceremony, SEAMO reflected with emotion, “I think this hair-cutting ceremony really showed how much Chiyonokuni is loved. I never get the chance to sing in front of the sumo ring again in my lifetime, so I was nervous to be able to sing in such an amazing place and situation.”
Regarding the fact that Chiyonokuni was encouraged by “Continue” while he was still active, SEAMO said, “I’m very happy. I think this song will really resonate with people who are living their lives to the fullest now, and people who don’t get much of the spotlight but are working hard.” He expressed his joy and the thoughts he put into the song,
“Chiyonokuni was a man with a bright future, but he was demoted to the makushita division due to injuries, but he never gave up and kept climbing back up, so I think he would be able to relate to the part of this song that says not giving up, even after losing over and over, will help you achieve your dreams,” he said, pondering.
Regarding having the opportunity to sing at Ryogoku Kokugikan for the first time, she said, “Actually, I had the chance to perform a live show at Ryogoku Kokugikan a long time ago, but I wasn’t able to do it then, and I never thought it would happen in this way now,” with an expression of deep emotion on her face as she spoke about being able to sing at a place that she had once given up on due to her continued singing career.
Finally, he expressed his enthusiasm, saying, “After today’s hair-cutting ceremony, I will work hard and do my best to perform on an even bigger stage.”
