[Comment from Toshio Kadomatsu]
A project called VOCALAND was launched in the mid-90s. At that time, I temporarily put down the signboard that read “Toshio Kadomatsu” and was busy working as a producer, taking on music production behind the scenes. At that time, I was surprised when the founding members and directors of Avex, which was a hot topic at the time and was being hailed as an up-and-coming company, came to visit my small office in Harajuku in droves. By the way, the directors were not old men with good money, but stylish young people, and I remember thinking that these kind of people would create the future. Their request was, “We would like Mr. Kadomatsu to do something.” It’s not something specific, but something. I was surprised by the way this request was made, but at the same time I was also excited. It may have been similar to the feeling of elation that a boy in the Showa era felt when building a plastic model. The idea was that they should do whatever they wanted with the generous production budget. So what I came up with was a compilation of unknown female singers. I had no interest in things like people who had already established sales or had a big entertainment company behind them, and I didn’t want to get involved with them. I came up with the idea of a work composed only of people. Furthermore, I had always wanted to have an American singer sing the track I produced, so this was a great opportunity to make that happen. Anyway, I was able to do what I wanted with the generous production budget. VOCALAND was a project that would be unthinkable today. In the end, we were only able to achieve modest results in terms of sales, and I felt sorry for everyone at Avex who was involved. However, for me, the experience of being able to conduct various experiments using the latest techniques and methods at the time was extremely valuable, and it was a great learning experience that led to my current production methods. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to everyone involved in Avex at that time.
More than 30 years have passed since then. I’ve been thinking about creating a complete remix of VOCALAND for about four years. This is because the many sounds recorded in that multi-data are like a museum of sounds from the 90s, and they are all extremely valuable. It is no exaggeration to say that they are the starting point prototype for the music that young people today are producing and listening to. I felt that it was a valuable record of my sonic experiments from that time. Putting aside the recent 80’s boom, I wanted to re-present this work purely as a musician. However, I don’t have the right to freely use VOCALAND, which is the master record of avex, so it was just a “dream” and “hope.” However, this time, I received a request from one of the few staff members at avex who knew about those days, to create a non-stop mix of VOCALAND using original sound sources. It was a valuable story since there are almost no people in the current avex production scene who know about that time. VOCALAND consists of two albums, 1 and 2, and each had a different concept: 1 was centered on the dance music approach that was Avex’s specialty at the time, and 2 was a ballad album centered on male and female duets. This time, the request was for a non-stop mix, so the work focused on 1. However, my encounter with Rie Yoshizawa, who was from VOCALAND 2 and later achieved great success as a musical singer, has been very important in my current activities, and I still ask her to help out in various scenes as a backing vocalist and duet partner. . In that sense, although Mr. Yoshizawa is a 2-year-old, the work of Mr. Yoshizawa was used as the beginning and end of this work, which is based on one person. In addition, he created a new mix of his first duet number with Yoshizawa, “Never Gonna Miss You,” and a new song, “May your dreams come true.” This number is a duet version of the song “Turn on your lights”, which is included in my 25th original album “MAGIC HOUR” which will be released this May. I hope you will listen to this song and imagine the story of the separated man and woman who appeared in the lyrics of “Never Gonna Miss You” more than 30 years later, and what they are feeling afterward. I would be even happier if this work was listened to by many people and the current staff at avex became interested in producing complete remixes of VOCALAND 1 and 2, remastering the originals, making analog discs, etc. (lol) I’ll accept you anytime (lol)

[Rie Yoshizawa comment]
I can’t believe something like this is happening for me! The only new addition, “May your dreams come true,” is a really wonderful number that feels like it has a flow from “Never Gonna Miss You,” and as I sang it, I felt a deep emotion that I can only feel now that time has passed. (Although it was difficult to sing (lol))
Mr. Kadomatsu is truly amazing! !
The singing voices of all the wonderful singers who participated will bring new excitement to this era!
The above two songs also include male and female versions, so be sure to sing along!

“VOCALAND” is based on the studio recordings of the 1980s created by Toshio Kadomatsu, but also incorporates the new technology of the 1990s and the techniques of “live” musicians created in the moment, as well as vocalists. It was an innovative project that combined a story told with voice. Due to the resurgence of the “city pop” boom of the 1970s and 1980s, songs by female artists produced by Toshio Kadomatsu are being reevaluated around the world, and this time it will be released at this time.VOCALAND REBIRTH Extended Mix by TOSHIKI KADOMATSUAlthough the songs included in this album were in a frozen period at the time, they are proof that Toshio Kadomatsu has always continued to pursue new musical possibilities and sounds without hesitation.
