Kansai Okura High School wins the 12th DCC Online Qualifier! All 37 teams advance to the finals!

The results of the online qualifying competition for “avex presents DANCE CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP 12th National High School Dance Club Championship (hereinafter referred to as DCC),” which determines the best high school dance club in Japan, have been announced. 21 teams, including the winning Kansai Okura High School, have earned tickets to the final competition. All 37 teams, including the previous year’s seeded schools and those that made it through the regional qualifying competitions, will compete in the final competition to be held at Tokyo Garden Theater (Koto-ku, Tokyo) on Tuesday, August 20th.

DCC is a competition that pits the best high school dance clubs from across the country. It began in 2013 and will be held for the 12th time this year. The judging criteria are “how well the two-character kanji theme is expressed through dance,” as well as three categories of “expressiveness,” “technical ability,” and “originality,” with scores out of 100 points. In addition to regional competitions being held in six areas from June in Tohoku, Kanto, Chubu, Kansai, Kyushu, and Taiwan, online preliminary competitions will be held, and the 37 winning teams from all over the country will compete in the final competition to be held in Tokyo in August.

On July 14th, the results of the online qualifying tournament were announced on YouTube, and all 21 teams that advanced to the finals were announced. Below are comments from the schools that placed 1st to 5th in the online qualifying tournament.

▼ 1st place
Kansai Okura High School / Theme: Bugs
“I never thought we’d be called in as number one, and I’m really happy that our last summer has been reflected in this result. It was made by third-year students and teachers. Most of the students are beginners, and many of them started dancing as part of club activities.”

▼ 2nd place
Hosoda Gakuen High School / Theme: Feast of Vanity
“With this ‘Vanity Feast’, I wanted to convey that the impression people often have of a pure and beautiful masked ball is the current state of the world, and that we shouldn’t just cling to that. Even though it’s a masked ball, I included dark elements and elements that are different from the norm.”

▼Third place
Osaka Prefectural Tomigaoka High School / Theme: Spirit Attack (Offer Your Heart)
“First of all, thank you so much for selecting me. I have had many meetings and practiced hard every day, so I am very grateful. I was really nervous about this tournament due to a series of injuries, so I am very happy.”

▼ 4th place
Tezukayama Gakuin High School / Theme: Your Wings (How Do You Live?)
“I’m really happy that I was able to create this piece thanks to the support of so many people. Thank you very much. To be honest, I wasn’t very confident, but I’m happy. The theme includes wings, so I tried to express wings in my own way.”

▼ 5th place
Komazawa University High School / Theme: Infatuation
“We had all been talking about going to the nationals on this stage, which we had really longed for, and we had been working hard, so I’m really happy. Thank you. We’ve been practicing for over six months, and we’re focusing on the opening and the last chorus. We want to further polish our opening.”

In addition to the teams selected this time, a total of 37 teams will compete in the final tournament, including the teams selected from the previous year’s seeded schools, teams selected from the regional qualifying tournaments, and one team from the Taiwan qualifying tournament.
With the tournament fast approaching, we will be honing our skills even more, so please continue to look forward to the tournament.
Avex will continue to contribute to dance culture and aim to provide high school students, the leaders of the next generation, with opportunities to gain social experience through dance.
