︎Inagaki
Inagaki is a London-based contemporary Japanese figurative artist born in 1998. Driven by a mixture of repulsion and admiration for Western culture, he became fascinated with graffiti in Tokyo, and this background is reflected in his murals, public art and studio works.
Interested in exploring and understanding urban spaces since he was a child, his figurative paintings often feature creatures, young people and everyday objects found in the city, and these themes are at the center of his research and production. He is currently working on a series of figurative paintings depicting different situations and surreal dramas in major cities, and his experiences living in Tokyo, Moscow and London, as well as his involvement with graffiti and vandalism, have influenced his work, which focuses on tension, liberation, optimism and gentrification in urban environments.
The figures in his paintings are often covered in black, exuding anonymity by concealing their regional and cultural specificity, and are often constructed from artificial materials and depicted as posthuman or humanoid in form. This identity, halfway between organic and inorganic, is a personal expression of the reality faced by a new generation of Japanese people torn between Western influences and a traditionally homogenous society.
