The animated film “KING OF PRISM -Dramatic PRISM.1-” was released on Friday, August 16th and is currently a huge hit. Today, on Sunday, September 8th, the fourth week since its release, a special stage greeting was held to celebrate the film’s success, with the all-star cast appearing on stage. “Over the Rainbow” by Tetsuya Kakihara (role of Kouji Kamihama), Tomoaki Maeno (role of Hiro Hayami), and Toshiki Masuda (role of Kazuki Nishina) gathered at Shinjuku Wald 9.
This event marked the first time the three had gathered together in several years, and the audience, still excited from having just finished watching the main film, immediately erupted into loud applause and cheers.
First, Kakihara introduced himself, and the audience responded with strong “hello” and “huuuu” as if they were cheering at a screening. Next, Maeno said, “Everyone in the venue, everyone watching the live viewing, honey~”, and the audience responded with “Kiss!” in a call-and-response that imitated a line from the film, and the venue erupted in excitement. Finally, Masuda shouted “Burning! Freedom!”, a line from Nishina Kazuki, the character he plays, and Kakihara expressed regret that he didn’t say his catchphrase, which caused laughter throughout the venue. Regarding this event, which was the first time in about seven years that the three of them appeared together, Kakihara expressed deep emotion as he looked back on the trajectory of the film, saying, “I’m really happy to be able to meet people who have been supporting me for a long time and people who have just started supporting me,” and Masuda said, “It was a work from when I was a rookie, and I was able to appear on stage with two people who have been helping me for a long time, and it reminded me of the tension I felt back then.”
When asked about his impressions of the film, Masuda commented, “At the time of the dubbing, it was in the storyboard stage, so it was difficult to find the tension and direction of the performance.” However, since it was the first recording, he revealed a behind-the-scenes story, saying, “I trusted the two (Maeno and Kakihara) and acted as a bridge.” Maeno then shared an episode of the struggle of trying to find the right temperature for the line, “Huh! Ahhh!” in the script, and showed empathy.
Next, when asked about his impressions of the film, Kakihara commented on the physiques of each character, who appears as a sumo wrestler in a commercial in the film. Regarding Hiro’s slim and slender build, in contrast to Koji, who has the strongest build, he commented, “I thought Hiro and Maeno-san had similar physiques.” Kakihara, whose hobby is weight training, excited the audience with his unique perspective.
The three have been playing their respective roles since “Pretty Rhythm: Rainbow Live,” the predecessor to “KING OF PRISM,” and have been working together for over 11 years this year. When asked about their memories of first playing their roles, Maeno recalled, “In the beginning, Hiro was difficult to play because he didn’t have a clear direction. We were given the direction that ‘Hiro’s body desires Bellu, but his heart desires Koji,’ and I struggled to get a feel for how to express that with his voice, but through that accumulation, the Hiro we know today gradually took shape.” Masuda said, “In that respect, Kazuki is the character who has changed the least from Pretty Rhythm to King & Prince. In Pretty Rhythm, he was portrayed as an older brother figure who brings everyone together, so I was nervous to play the role when I was a rookie.”
At the end of the Q&A session, the MC asked, “If we were to see a new story for Overlord in the future, what would you be looking forward to?” A voice immediately rose from the audience, “We want to see a solo Prism Show!”, to which the three members agreed, saying, “That’s true! We’d love to see that,” giving us a glimpse into the bonds that have been forged between the cast and fans of this series.
Finally, Masuda addressed the audience, saying, “I hope you will continue to support and nurture the culture that we have built together up until now”, Maeno said, “I am genuinely happy to be able to play Hiro again after such a long time. With your support, I would like to create a new legend with Over the Rainbow when I stand on stage as Hiro again someday”, and Kakihara concluded by saying, “I am so happy that you change the color of your glow sticks every time we speak and continue to support Over the Rainbow even after such a long time.
