A remastered version of Ryuichi Sakamoto’s first solo album after moving to commmons, “out of noise,” released in 2009, has been released as “out of noise – R” on vinyl, CD and digitally, and the soundtrack album for “Tony Takitani,” a 2005 film adaptation of Haruki Murakami’s short story directed by Ichikawa Jun, has been released on vinyl for the first time today.
The remastered version of “out of noise – R” is a new mastering of the director’s cut data left by Ryuichi Sakamoto himself, with “- R” added to the title, and will be released on vinyl, CD, and digitally. It is a quiet work with all instrumental tracks, and is the first original solo album to not use any synthesizers. The album mainly features piano and natural sounds, and features guests Fretwork from the British early music group, Sho player Tamami Higashino, and string players from a variety of genres, including Keigo Oyamada, Hirotaka Shimizu, Ren Takada, Christian Fennesz, and Rob Moose from the gagaku group Nanto Koyo-kai. The album also includes “disko,” “ice,” and “glacier,” which were strongly influenced by Sakamoto’s experiences in the Arctic Circle during the album’s production. “Glacier” was later used in the film “The Revenant” (directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu: 2016), and “Hibari” was used in the film “The Monster” (directed by Koreeda Hirokazu: 2023).
The soundtrack album for “Tony Takitani,” which is being released on vinyl for the first time, is a film directed by Ichikawa Jun based on a short story by Murakami Haruki, released in 2005. It creates a tranquil and beautiful world with piano accompaniment, including “Solitude,” a song often performed at Ryuichi Sakamoto’s concerts. When the film was released, the soundtrack album was not released on CD or vinyl, but was only available for download on the iTunes Store, which caused a stir.
On the same day, commmons will release a tribute work to Ryuichi Sakamoto, “Tribute to Ryuichi Sakamoto “Micro Ambient Music” Vinyl Series vol. 3.” This work, which won the 2023 German Music Critics’ Prize in the Electronic & Experimental category, is a collection of songs compiled as a tribute to the music of the late Ryuichi Sakamoto, who continued to focus on sound and small things more than music, in his later years. The series will be released every two months, with a total of six works planned.
