A report has arrived from the world’s fastest listening event held on Saturday, September 21st to celebrate the release of Ryuichi Sakamoto’s “out of noise – R”!

To celebrate the release of “out of noise – R”, a director’s cut version of Ryuichi Sakamoto’s original album “out of noise” released in 2009, a report has arrived from RITTOR BASE director Susumu Kunizaki, who organized the event “To Commemorate the Release of “out of noise – R”, the World’s Fastest Listening Event, Listening to Ryuichi Sakamoto, Playing Ryuichi Sakamoto vol.1, Featuring ILLUHA” held at Ochanomizu RITTOR BASE on Saturday, September 21st last week.

Ryuichi Sakamoto said of “out of noise” released in 2009, “I was finally able to create an album with a unified tone, which was my long-held dream.” Sakamoto’s previous solo albums, such as the one titled “Ongaku Zukan,” often contained a wide variety of songs, and were the exact opposite of a unified tone. However, in this work, based on the concept of taking a step closer to music from non-musical sounds, as indicated by the title “From Noise” or “Outside Noise,” Sakamoto has succeeded in constructing a soundscape that runs throughout the entire album by layering non-musical sounds such as field recordings, and even harmonics emitted by ancient instruments such as the sho and viol. At the time of its release, it was also talked about as “the first solo album without using any synthesizers,” but by making full use of DAWs (Digital Audio Workstations) and repeatedly performing sound treatments just like a gardener pruning trees, Sakamoto was able to create the soundscape he wanted without using synthesizers.

This work has been remastered and released as a new director’s version “out of noise – R” with unreleased tracks. On September 21st, prior to the release, a listening event was held at Ochanomizu RITTOR BASE, where the analog version was played on a high-resolution speaker system. The sound heard there was deeper than when it was first released, and it was possible to delve into a delicate world of sound. In particular, the sound unfolding in the so-called “Arctic Trilogy” “disko”, “ice”, and “glacier” was overwhelming, providing an immersive experience that was mistaken for an immersive experience despite being stereo. The unreleased track “081121_high” is a work in which metallic sounds with distortion unfold, the sound of a sho flickers, and background noise fills the background, creating a sound world that is reminiscent of the soundtrack of the later “The Revenant: The Revenant”.

After the listening session, there was a talk by ILLUHA, a unit consisting of Tomoyoshi Date, Corey Fuller, and Tatsuhisa Yamamoto, who were invited as guests. They talked about overtones and tonality, and pointed out that this album was an important step towards Sakamoto’s new territory in his later years, “async” and “12.” After the talk, ILLUHA performed an improvisation inspired by “out of noise – R,” which eventually developed into a cover of “hibari,” captivating the audience at the listening session.
