On the 13th, rugby player (Yokohama Canon Eagles) and Avex Management Agency member Yu Tamura held a rugby clinic “Ralph Lauren Yu Tamura Rugby Clinic” for elementary school students in Suita City, Osaka Prefecture.
Tamura was selected as a member of the Japanese national team for the 2015 and 2019 Rugby World Cups, and was a key player in the 2019 Rugby World Cup as the Japanese national team made it to the top eight for the first time.
He currently plays for the Yokohama Canon Eagles.
This clinic, which started last year and is now in its fourth year, is sponsored by Ralph Lauren, of which Tamura has been an ambassador since 2020, and has been holding a “project to support children’s dreams through rugby”.
More than 100 children, ranging in age from 3 to 12, were selected by lottery to participate and had the opportunity to learn directly from Tamura, a current top professional athlete.
For about an hour, the children experienced catching a ball, practicing making passes, tackling, and more.
In the final Q&A session, there were questions such as “Why did you become standoffish?”, “How can I become better at kicking like Tamura?” and “What can I do to pass faster?” Tamura himself seemed to be having fun, giving sincere advice with demonstrations in response to questions such as ”, taking commemorative photos with the children, and signing autographs.
Regarding his thoughts on holding this event, Tamura said, “I’m grateful that Ralph Lauren, who serves as the ambassador, has given me such a great opportunity, and with the support of so many people, I’m able to hold this wonderful event just like last year. It would be great if some players could learn the fun of playing and play an active role in the future.”
After the Rugby Clinic, a “Ralph Lauren Rugby Clinic Special Talk Show” was held with the entertainer Nanako Minami as MC.
During the approximately 30-minute talk show, he answered questions from fans about everything from rugby to fashion, and fully showed off Tamura’s off-duty side, which is usually not seen on the pitch. His natural speaking style excited fans of all ages, from children to adults, who gathered at the venue.
Regarding Japan Rugby League One, which begins in December, Tamura enthusiastically said, “We’ve had a frustrating experience in the playoffs for two years in a row, so next season we’ll do our best to aim for the championship.”
