American rapper Megan Thee Stallion has released the music video for “Mamushi (feat. Yuki Chiba).”
This song, which has been a big hit on social media, is included in the album “MEGAN” released in June this year, and features Japanese rapper Yuki Chiba as a guest. The song was produced by Koshy, also from Japan, who also produced “Team Tomodachi.”
The music video was directed by ONDA, an American director who has also worked on videos for Ye (ex. Kanye West) and Big Sean, and is a spectacular piece with a unique worldview reminiscent of Japanese gangster movies and a fantastic story. The video features not only Yuki Chiba, but also Masaru Kasamatsu, an up-and-coming Japanese actor who has been attracting attention from around the world for his role in the hit drama “TOKYO VICE.”
Regarding the music video, Kasamatsu Masaru commented, “It was a great honor to be involved in the filming of such a large-scale project, with a staff of 200 to 300 people. It was especially a wonderful experience to be able to work creatively with a team active in movies and TV dramas. At first, I ignored the casting call, thinking it was a prank call, but in the end I’m happy to have had the opportunity to take part in such an influential project.”
This song became a viral hit after a dance video posted by Japanese dancer MONA, and it ranked high on various charts. In addition, Megan appeared at a rally held in Atlanta on Tuesday, July 30th by Kamala Harris, a Democratic presidential candidate, and performed the song, which was reported as big news.
The “Mamushi phenomenon” is currently happening all over the world, with popular K-pop artists, athletes, and even the official social media accounts of NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) using the song and phrase in their posts.
