Quruli releases single produced by Italian musician Daniele Sepe

It has been announced that Quruli will release their new single “La Palummella” on Friday, October 11th.

This work was produced in Naples, Italy with Italian musician Daniele Sepe. The title song “La Palummella” is based on a Neapolitan folk song. Facing this old motif, he translated the lyrics into Japanese with the help of his friend Masao Nomura, who is fluent in Italian, and completed it with a traditional Neapolitan rhythm approach and arrangement by Daniele.

The other song, “Camel (‘Na Storia)” (Japanese: Camel (One Story)), is a new piece that has been reconstructed from Quruli’s previous song “Camel,” which Kishida Shigeru feels is very attached to, with Daniele’s production and arrangement.

The new song will be debuted with Daniele Sepe at the Kyoto Music Expo 2024, hosted by Quruli, which will be held at Umekoji Park in Kyoto on Saturday, October 12th and Sunday, October 13th.

[Comment from Shigeru Kishida (Quruli)]

-On “La Palummella”-

Long before we started Quruli, we loved listening to unknown music. Of course, we followed the popular music that our friends were listening to, but the real joy was discovering obscure music that no one else knew about.
A few years after Quruli’s career began, around 2001, I came across an album. This work by an Italian musician named Daniele Sepe, along with a pleasant shock, seeped into my body over time and gave me mysterious experiences many times.
For a long time to come, we will continue to have a conversation with a mysterious soul through his work.
One day in 2023, I landed in the pouring rain of Naples and suddenly decided to contact him. At the time, I never expected to receive a thoughtful reply, and I never imagined he would listen to some of my and Quruli’s work.
My approach to harmonies, modes, and rhythms has been greatly influenced by him. Even now that I’ve finished making music with him, I still don’t understand why, rather than the fact that he’s academically brilliant, or cool because of the influence of the Neapolitan school, I feel a sense of security with him, like a relative or a brother.
Throughout my life, I have never ceased to want to know and understand things. Even now, after gaining some experience as a musician, I still gain courage and hope through learning.
However, the comfort of the soul is not something that an ordinary person like me can understand, and sometimes, as a means to an expedient, we tag our encounters as fate or treasures. For me, this encounter was like an inevitable flow in the reeling light of life, and I accepted it very naturally.
He is a very talented musician, very human and charming, and a composer/performer deeply immersed in the soil and culture of Naples. The many performers by his side are also very charming, and while producing and recording this music, I came to love the city of Naples, which is far away from Japan (but seems to be connected to it), and Italian culture.
It is very difficult to give a specific commentary on this work, but I sincerely congratulate myself on this day, when I am able to continue to exchange souls with this man, who is active in a faraway country, and I intend to use this as inspiration for my future musical activities.
The title song “La Palummella” is an old opera aria based on Neapolitan folk music. In Japan, “Canzone” is well known and widely known as “Go Home to Sorrento” and “Santa Lucia”, but we faced these old motifs and completed the Japanese translation with the help of our friend Masao Nomura, who is fluent in Italian. The song was completed by mixing the traditional Neapolitan rhythm approach with Daniele’s approach of mixing various kinds of music.
I also reconstructed Quruli’s previous work “Camel,” which I personally have a lot of attachment to, with his production and arrangement, and completed it as a new work.
