Ovall’s bassist, Shingo Suzuki, has started a new venture called “Shingo Suzuki LYPS,” a solo project in which he creates the sound by replacing artists who resonate with his music. The 1st single “You don’t know (what life is) feat. Kojoe, Ruri Matsumura” was released today, May 8th (Wednesday).

The stoically looped electric piano in a hip-hop style, the sharp piano solo and drumming in the second half have jazz elements, and the sense of time and phrasing of the drums gives the piece a feel of alternative, contemporary black music.
The songwriting process, which was inspired by Chet Baker’s “You Don’t Know What Love Is,” evolved through a recording session between Shingo Suzuki and Ruri Matsumura, and the contrast between Ruri Matsumura’s English vocals and Kojoe’s Japanese rap. The content is impressive.
In addition, Shingo Suzuki will continue to invite other artists to this project = LYPS (Liquid Yellow Portraits), and will express songs with unconventional sound makeup while centering on jazz and soul.

Collaboration with Kojoe/Ruri Matsumura finally realized!
The rap and vocals are a mix of Japanese and English, and have a sense of humor even in the tense atmosphere.
Shota Watanabe’s aggressive piano and Masato Mori’s drums.
When I created a demo and came up with the Rose piano riff, I was convinced that it would be a good song.
The thrilling pre-production session and studio recording resulted in a song that will give you goosebumps!

I remember that when I first heard the demo that included Ruri Matsumura’s part, I immediately started working on it because the beat, melody, and everything else struck a chord with me.
Actually, there are two versions (singing version and rap version), but you might be able to see both during the live performance.
