At the 80th anniversary of the end of the war and 53 years since the return of Okinawa, a collaboration performance video between Awich and KUNIKO, “Awich × KUNIKO Inspired by Mao Ishikawa “Red Flower” at KYOTOGRAPHIE & KYOTOPHONIE 2025 Opening Ceremony” has been released.

This video features a live performance performed at the opening ceremony of the “KYOTOGRAPHIE Kyoto International Photo Festival” held in Kyoto on Friday, April 11th. The film was created in conjunction with this year’s theme, “HUMANITY,” inspired by the exhibition “Akabana” by photographer Ishikawa Mao, an Okinawan photographer.

Awich rewrites and reads his poem, “Okinawan Women,” in a way that dedicated it to Ishikawa Mao. Furthermore, the first performance of “Inagchan Sweets,” which incorporates Okinawan folk songs and traditional rap techniques, was performed in Okinawan, Japanese and English. It features respect for Okinawan women who wear dresses made from US military parachutes and live at the mercy of history yet at the heart of their lives. The performance is a deep look at Awich’s musical roots and spirituality, and is filled with sincere love and prayer for his hometown, Okinawa, which sets it apart from his usual works.

This video will once again be a milestone day when Okinawa is returned to Okinawa, and will give you a chance to face the history that Okinawa has had and connect the past and present. In today’s world, war continues, the content also includes a universal message that quietly asks the question of “the preciousness of life” and “dignity as a human being,” and can be said to resonate with many people, not just in Okinawa or Japan.
