The music video for her latest single, “Unlock Your Soul,” released by Taiwanese R&B artist Malpaca on Friday, July 4th, has been released.
This is the first single from his first album, “(No wool. No hump))”, scheduled to be released this summer. This mid-tempo R&B number is based on the theme of self-liberation and inner recovery, and depicts a journey to rethink one’s own personality, bound by someone else’s expectations and the gaze of society. The lyrics, which combine English and Chinese, reflect fantastic yet realistic conflicts, quietly asking, “Who do you want to tell someone about your soul?”
The music video is directed by Sogare, a Japanese multi-artist who has been nominated for the Golden Melody Awards for his recent co-written album with popular Taiwanese rapper Leo, and poeticly portrays the dialogue between the two characters with “another self that can only be met in a dream.” The scenery, which is repeated as if sewing iconic motifs such as grasslands, ships and ruins, highlights an invisible inner journey, creating a visual world that resembles a short film.
Malpaca is an R&B/neo-soul singer-songwriter who has continued his research at a graduate school in Taidai Electric, and began producing music on his own. He is a DIY artist who has worked on producing, writing, and songwriting, and is attracting attention for his free style that spans multiple genres. She is also fluent in Japanese, and is planning to collaborate with Japanese artists.
He is affiliated with the label ChynaTown, which is famous for his collaboration with STUTS and 5lack, and last year he released a co-written work with King Leo and RPGs. Additionally, he also announced his collaboration song “No Water Play” with Hogan T., who was nominated for the “Newcomer Award” for “King Quen Shou” in 2024.
As he describes himself as “a being in between, neither sheep nor a reptile,” his attractiveness is his neutral and flexible expressiveness that does not fit into genres or affiliations. Based in Taipei, he is a poetic and somewhat otherworldly worldview, and is gradually attracting listeners both at home and abroad.
