Experimental party “Feat.MATAWA” to be held for the 10th time with the theme “dismantling rhythm”

The party “Feat.MATAWA,” hosted by matawa, a creative unit with the motto of “creating new ways of thinking,” will be held for the 10th time on Friday, June 28th at bonobo in Jingumae, Tokyo.

In the past, this party has reconsidered the existing form of party by organizing events that incorporate theater, dance, painting, etc. The theme this time is “dismantling rhythm.” Philosopher Klages makes a clear distinction between meter and rhythm, the former being artificially “repeated” and the latter being ubiquitous in the natural world and “renewed each time.” Matawa assumes that the general musical experience provided in the current club scene is based on repeating meter, and challenges the creation of rhythm, which is a more primitive joy. Paradoxically, this means a thorough deconstruction and reconstruction of the commonly used concept of “rhythm.” Rhythm is not something that is given, but can be thought of as something that continues to be born each time in the audience’s bodies.

This time, matawa will invite experimental artists from all over the scene. The live act will be Zhuangzi it, producer of Dos Monos, who recently released his new album “Dos Atomos,” and who will be performing an even more abstract and freaky solo set this time. Reo Anzai, producer of the up-and-coming label/collective “wau,” who has also worked on soundtracks from an academic approach on his own, and who recently appeared at “MUTEK.” The lineup will include rilium, a producer/singer-songwriter who is attracting attention for his unique approach influenced by Nordic folk music and hyperpop.

The DJs include nø¡R, who has been making a big presence in recent years in dance and experimental music, having provided mixes for outdoor parties in and around Tokyo and Georgia’s Mutant Radio; arow, who is based in Shinjuku SPACE and is active day and night in many left-field scenes in and around Tokyo, as the head of CCCOLLECTIVE; Ritsuko Sakata, who is active in a wide range of fields, including releasing bike sound mix CDs, the deep listening party ideala, and producing alternative music under the name pagtas; Shiojiri Sora, the manager of the sleepless record store Rawmen Records in Sangenjaya, who is highly trusted in the scene as a collector of indigenous and nostalgic LPs with a sense of otherworldliness; and tomo takashima, the head of matawa, who loves contemporary music and free jazz LPs, mainly from the former Soviet Union. The event will create a dark night with melting periodic rhythms.
