“BRAND NEW TRAD 2024,” an event to bring a fresh wind to roots music, will be held on Saturday, September 21st at the Music Town Otoichiba in Okinawa City.
Roots music that remains in various parts of the world is being updated daily as world music by repeatedly cross-breeding with new musical elements. In this performance, three artists from Okinawa, Japan, and Sweden will be performing the newest form of roots music.
This time, Aragaki Mutsumi, an internationally acclaimed artist from Okinawa, will perform in a piano set, while percussionist/singer-songwriter Kakudo Mami will perform in a duo with cellist Iwao Yumiko. In addition, BITOI (Bass Is The Original Instrument), a unit consisting of one bassist and three vocalists from Sweden, will also be visiting Japan. While valuing their own roots, these three artists, who are challenging themselves with cutting-edge music, will perform solo performances as well as collaborate to create new music.
On the day, 50 groups (100 people) of elementary and junior high school students who live and study in Okinawa City (elementary school students must be accompanied by a guardian) will be invited to the performance as part of the “Music Town Otoichiba Fanbase Expansion Project” (details will be announced at a later date), and there will also be a paid live broadcast. In addition, it will be announced that the performance will be streamed free of charge overseas so that it can be widely viewed in Sweden, where BITOI is from.
