Tokyo Highway Radio EP149

“Tokyo Highway Radio” is a 60-minute program that focuses on music and stories related to music, focusing on new songs by domestic artists with alternative sensibilities, from city pop to indie rock, hip hop to future soul. This time, the guest is SSW butaji, who has publicly announced that he is queer and continues to be committed to “Pride Month”. The program DJ Mino interviewed him about his thoughts on Pride Month, the current state of the LGBTQ+ community, and his new song “True Colors”.

“I want to cherish Pride Month. If I don’t express my intentions, I’ll just be a bystander,” says butaji, who released a collaboration single for this year’s Pride Month with Japan’s butaji, Thai singer Flower.far, and Japanese producer MET. “What’s important in a collaboration is to respect people with different backgrounds than you, accept them, and have the words to explain your intentions. This time, I was inspired by far’s lyrics, and the lyrics I wrote changed drastically. It was a lot of fun, and it also led to a discovery of myself,” butaji says, looking back on the production process.

He also introduced the thoughts behind the new song, saying, “I think everyone has bad memories in life, but they are also an important part of who we are. The theme of the song is to accept the past and live actively.” In addition, you can enjoy “True Colors” in spatial audio with Dolby Atmos on Apple Music.

Butaji also answers a variety of questions sincerely, including about the first artist that made an impact on him, the theme song of his life, and what he wants to convey as an artist through music based on the musical experiences that have empowered him.
