■Gen Hoshino curates the entire late-night SONIC STAGE! A stellar lineup of artists, with Hoshino performing in a rare DJ style
The timetables for “SUMMER SONIC 2024” and “SONIC MANIA” have been released, and additional artists have been announced.
“SONIC MANIA” will be held on August 16th and will be the biggest all-night festival in Japan, where 3 stages in Makuhari Messe will be transformed into a dance floor. With a diverse range of genres and a luxurious mix of performers from Japan and abroad that can only be seen at SONIC MANIA, you can dance to the intense beats as much as you like, or enter into your own world of music and enjoy it until the morning. It’s a festival for all music “maniacs”.
The opening acts will be SARUKANI, a four-piece beatboxer duo that won the crew division at the Grand Beatbox Battle 2023, the world’s largest beatboxing competition, literally earning the title of world number one, and who “hold the stage with just their own voices.” Two other acts who have attracted attention for their global activities have been added: Chameleon Lime Whoopie Pie, who have performed at SXSW, the world’s largest multi-purpose festival, for two consecutive years.
Summer Sonic Tokyo is made up of six stages, each with its own unique charm. The two outdoor stages are the Stadium, where you can feel the sea breeze of the Marine Area, and the photogenic Beach Stage, where chill memories are made every year. The indoor area of Makuhari Messe is air-conditioned and comfortable, with four stages where you can enjoy a lavish lineup of performers from Japan and abroad from morning until night. Make good use of the free Summer Sonic shuttle bus that connects the two areas, take care of yourself against the summer heat, including staying hydrated, and enjoy your ideal timetable.
Summer Sonic Osaka will be held at a new venue, and you can fully experience the otherworldly charm of the open location filled with greenery and the stage that appears there. In addition, the interior of the Tower of the Sun, a symbol of the 1970 Osaka Expo, located in Expo Commemoration Park, will be open to the public during the event, and is available only to Summer Sonic Osaka visitors. Advance ticket sales will begin on July 11th at 10:00 on the Summer Sonic app. Sales will be on a first-come, first-served basis.
As an additional announcement, the four-piece rock band The BONEZ, who liven up the venue with their overwhelmingly emotional live performances, will appear on the PACIFIC stage of the Tokyo performance on August 17. In addition, the opening act for the Osaka performance will be performed by tonun and Conton Candy, two next-generation artists who are strongly supported by the younger generation.
Gen Hoshino will be curating the entire late-night SONIC STAGE at the Tokyo show on August 17th at “MIDNIGHT SONIC”, just as he did in 2023. Under the title “so sad so happy midnight” Curated by Gen Hoshino, a stellar cast will gather at Makuhari in the middle of the night.
Needless to say, he is one of the most important figures in the contemporary jazz world, and has won multiple Grammy awards for his style that has made various genres such as gospel, hip-hop, and R&B his own while sending out a consistent cultural message. Robert Glasper, one of the world’s greatest musicians, has confirmed that he will appear as ROBERT GLASPER WITH SPECIAL GUEST YEBBA, a special unit with YEBBA, a notable singer whose voice is praised by many artists.
In addition, TUCKER, who has been active since the 1990s with his unique improvisational music using the electric organ and continues to perform as a guest keyboardist for various musicians, Terrace Martin, a crucial producer, multi-instrumentalist and singer who has a rich background and a solid sense of style and who mends and reconstructs the gap between jazz and hip-hop, Answer to Remember, a project spun by musicians of the same generation as drummer Shun Ishiwaka, who is a unique presence in the current Japanese popular music scene, DJ JIN (RHYMESTER), who has supported the DJ scene from the dawn of hip-hop to the present, Nagaokaryosuke, who is a guitarist and also produces and writes songs for the Petrols, and Gen Hoshino, the curator of this event, will appear in a rare DJ style. The timetable for MIDNIGHT SONIC will be announced at a later date.
All tickets to SUMMER SONIC Tokyo can be used to enter MIDNIGHT SONIC. Tickets to MIDNIGHT SONIC will also go on sale from 10am on July 13th. Ticket details will be announced at a later date.
Also, there is good news for those who were unable to get tickets. It has been decided that a small number of tickets will be resold for the Tokyo venue only. This applies to 1-day tickets and platinum tickets for each day. However, there are no plans to resell tickets for the sold-out Osaka performance.
If you look at the timetable and want to be among the first to head to the stage area, consider purchasing a “morning numbered ticket” that will be introduced in 2024. It has also been decided that picnic boxes, which allow you to enjoy Marine Stadium at your leisure, will be resold (both the morning numbered ticket and the picnic box require separate admission tickets).
