Tottori-born artist jo0ji (read: George) released his new song “Dasha” (read: Dasa) digitally on July 10th. The music video was released at 8pm on the same day.
“Dasha” is a song about the heartbreak of jo0ji’s local friend. The song expresses the strength of a friend who was pushed around by a useless man and overcame a relationship that ended in disaster, turning it into a laughing matter, with powerful yet sad lyrics, melody, and composition. The grand finale is like the end credits of a movie, so be sure to listen.
The music video, which combines live action and animation, was directed by Margt, a creative unit that also worked on jo0ji’s “≒” and “Lantern,” as well as the video for “Fukutsuni Hana,” which was released just last month. Ryoji Yamada served as animation director.
In the video, squids of various colors dance in the scenery of jo0ji’s hometown of Tottori, as if linking with the emotions contained in the song. The cut of the horde of squids filling the screen is overwhelming and a must-see.
The digital jacket design was created by Shintaro Kira, who also designed the first EP “475” and the digital single “escaper.”
The son of a fisherman, jo0ji has an unusual background, working at a fishing port even now. He was selected by Spotify as one of the next generation artists expected to make a breakthrough in 2024, “RADAR: Early Noise 2024,” and by Amazon as one of “Breakthrough Japan: Artists to Watch in 2024.”
The song “≒” from his first EP “475” released on September 20, 2023 was selected for “J-WAVE SONAR TRAX,” and his new song “Dashata” was selected for heavy rotation on FM802, making him the next breakout artist.
