■Nakajima Kento travels to Mumbai, the mecca of Indian cinema and the heart of Bollywood, for the second episode of WOWOW’s “Movie Traveler”!
The second episode of WOWOW’s new program “Nakajima Kento Movie Traveler,” in which Nakajima Kento travels around the world with a focus on movies, will begin airing at midnight on August 11th (※On WOWOW On Demand, it will be available for pre-airing from midnight on August 1st).
This program is a new type of movie information program with the theme of “movies x travel” in which Nakajima Kento experiences the unique film culture that exists in various countries around the world and talks to filmmakers who represent those countries, thereby delving into the current state of world cinema.
The first destination is India, the world’s largest movie powerhouse. In the first part, we traveled to Bengaluru, a major city in southern India, but in this second part, we visit Mumbai, the mecca of film and the heart of Bollywood.
The true essence of Indian movies is their colorful and unique dance scenes. The movie that established this image in Japan was “Muthu,” which was released in 1998 and sparked the Indian movie boom. Furthermore, the Naatu dance from “RRR,” which went beyond the boundaries of Indian movies and captivated the world with its spectacular performance, became the first Indian movie to win the Academy Award for Best Original Song at the 95th Academy Awards.
What is the meaning of dance in Indian films, and how has it evolved? Why is dance so important in Indian films? Nakajima actually learns authentic dance from Raju Khan, a legendary choreographer who leads the Indian film industry, to get to the heart of it.
The second preview video is now available on WOWOW’s official YouTube channel. In addition, WOWOW On Demand is also streaming the unreleased first video along with the second preview video, so be sure to check that out too.
■ Comment from Kento Nakajima
In the Indian film industry, choreographers are involved in film production on an equal footing with the director. That’s how important dance is in Indian films. I was very surprised to learn that it is also very important for actors to learn dance in this country. Perhaps one day dancing will become the standard in Japanese films as well. That’s what I thought.
