■ In the third episode of “Kento Nakajima: A Film Journey,” he meets a Japanese woman who is a top cinematographer in the Indian film industry.
The third episode of “Nakajima Kento Movie Traveler,” in which Nakajima travels around the world with a focus on movies, will be broadcast from midnight on September 8th. Prior to that, it will be available for pre-order on WOWOW On Demand from midnight on September 1st.
This program is a new type of movie information program with the theme of “movies x travel,” which explores the unique movie culture that exists in each country and talks to filmmakers who represent those countries, thereby delving into the current state of world movies.
The first destination is India, the world’s largest movie powerhouse. Following on from the second trip, this time the setting is Mumbai, the mecca of movies and the heart of Bollywood. There is a Japanese person here who is well-known in the Indian movie industry. Cinematographer Keiko Nakahara, who Nakajima was very keen to meet, is one of the top cinematographers in the Indian movie industry. “Mary Kom,” a biographical film depicting the life of a legendary Indian female boxer who won the world championship five times, made her name known in India with her shooting methods and lighting that were not used in Indian movies, and she has been involved in 17 Indian movies.
This episode of the program takes a special peek into the set of “Tanvi The Great” (scheduled for release in 2025), a new movie in which Nakahara is taking part. The film is directed by and stars Anupam Kher, a legend in the Indian film industry who has appeared in over 400 films both at home and abroad, including Silver Linings Playbook, and the music is by M.M. Keravani, the Oscar-winning composer of “RRR.”
Nakajima was impressed, saying, “It’s so cool to see a Japanese person giving instructions to everyone on set overseas!” and he delves into the secrets of Nakahara’s image-making, which has earned him such acclaim in India. Nakahara says he strives to take cool and beautiful photos of his actors, and Nakajima even pitches him for a role in an Indian film, saying, “I’m fine with any angle! I’d love for you to shoot me someday.” Nakajima interviews director Kher about why he asked Nakahara to be his cinematographer. The connection with Japanese films and the unknown filming style of Indian films are revealed one after another.
Additionally, the third episode’s preview is now available on WOWOW’s official YouTube channel. Furthermore, WOWOW On Demand is currently streaming the third episode’s preview as well as unreleased footage from the second episode.
■ Comment from Kento Nakajima
I thought that a respected Japanese person in a foreign country would be a tense person, but there I met Nakahara-san, who was kind and gentle to everyone on the site. I was very happy to meet such a strong and beautiful Japanese woman who has been active in India for over 10 years. I also felt that there is a lot of potential for Japanese people in India.
