■ “I started because I wanted to become a Re:Born myself” (Jang Keun-suk)

Jang Keun-suk has been appointed as the MC of the boy band reality survival show “Re:Born.” Here is an official interview regarding his appointment.

“Re:Born” is the ultimate reality survival show that looks into the front and back of K-POP. 12 K-POP boy groups that have already debuted in Korea (AIMERS, BeMAX, BXB, DIGNITY, DKB, DXMON, EASTSHINE, E’LAST, L5ST, WAKER, WEUS, XODIAC *in alphabetical order) will compete in earnest for a chance to debut in Japan.

■ Jang Keun-suk Interview
Q. Is this your first time as an MC on a Japanese TV show?
Jang Keun-sukIt’s been about 16 years since I debuted in Japan, but I have never been the MC of a TV show in Japan before, so I think my role on the show “Re:Born” is very important, so I want to do my best until the very end, with a sense of tension.

Q. How did you feel when you received the offer to be the MC of the show “Re:Born”? And why did you decide to appear?
Jang Keun-sukMC is a presenter, right? I was able to communicate with my fans and friends in Japanese, but I wondered if I could speak in standard Japanese on the show. The moment I thought that, the staff member next to me said, “Keun-suk, it’s Korean,” and I thought, “OK! Let’s do it.” I was confident because it was a Korean show made in Korea, with the cast and staff, and everyone there was Korean.

Q. What image do you have of the word Re:Born?
Jang Keun-suk: The name of the show is “Re:Born,” and I think the title makes me feel like I can become a new Re:Born in Japan. It’s been a while since I’ve been on a Japanese TV show. Up until now, I’ve had a lot of live shows, concerts, and events other than the show, but this time, with the show “Re:Born” that is so Jang Keun Suk-like, I started with the feeling that I want to become a Re:Born myself.

Q. What are your aspirations as the MC of the “Re:Born” program?
Jang Keun-suk: (On August 20th) The media gave a lot of coverage to the program introduction of “Re:Born” and the news that Jang Keun-suk had become the first MC in Japan for “Re:Born”. When I saw that, I realized that I also needed to have a sense of responsibility. I think my role is to safely walk with my juniors who have dreams to the point where they can reach their potential. My current resolve is to finish the program safely and without incident until the very end.

Q. As a senior artist who debuted and had success in Japan, what are your thoughts about taking on the show? Please give a message to the boy bands.
Jang Keun-suk: I think that everyone who has a dream wants to become a star in the sky, but we can’t all go there together. In the end, I think it’s up to you to work harder and harder every day, practice more and more, and take on more and more challenges, until the last person becomes a shining star. I’m rooting for you, so please do your best until the very end. Safety first! Hehehe (laughs)

Q. Jang Keun-suk, you have had great success debuting in both Korea and Japan. What was your motivation for debuting in Japan (overseas)?I think it’s difficult to show your true colors in Japan. What kind of preparations did you make for your Japanese debut?
Jang Keun-suk: I think it’s a culture after all, but it’s close but it seems so far away. So even if I thought about what I prepared in Korea and brought it to Japan as if I wanted to give it to everyone, in the end, when I was on set, I was like, “Oh, this is it!” and I didn’t need anything I had been thinking about before, so to speak, and it became a daily habit to ask myself what my new talent is and what Japanese people originally like. From that time, when I thought about what I wanted to give to everyone in Japan more and more, I had worries every day about what I should practice and what there is, and that’s what I worked hardest on. Every day I didn’t give up, and I believed in myself with the feeling that I wanted to become a star that was shining more and more. It was like, “You’re good enough to be a star. So let’s do our best today too!” I believe in positive thinking.

Q. Have you ever had an experience where you felt like, “I was Re:Born at that moment”?
Jang Keun-sukI started as a child actor from the age of 5 and worked as an actor in Korea for a long time, but I think my debut as a singer in Japan at the age of 24 was my first Re:Born moment. My life had always been about acting in front of the camera as an actor, expressing the character’s colors rather than my own, but from that time onwards, looking everyone in the eye on stage, expressing myself on set while looking into their eyes instead of into the camera lens, and I felt like, “Wow, a new life has begun.”

Q. Please give a message to the Japanese viewers who are looking forward to the broadcast.
Jang Keun-suk: We don’t know yet who will end up receiving the love from everyone in Japan from today onwards, so we think we need your love and interest from now on. Please continue to support our juniors with all your might until the end. Thank you.
