■Comments from Daigo Nishihata (role of Ieshige Tokugawa/Fukutaro Tokunaga)
Q: Please tell me how you felt when you received the offer.
I never expected to be chosen as the eldest son of Yoshimune, played by Ken Matsudaira, so I was really surprised. I am very happy to be able to be a part of this historical work that has been loved for so long.
Ieshige, the character I play, has a physical disability and is not well-received by those around him, despite being the eldest son of the Shogun family. Every day, I take on the challenge of photographing, thinking about how well I can express the feelings of a man who lives with various burdens on his shoulders.

Q: Please tell us your impressions of co-starring with Matsudaira Ken, the lead actor, for the first time.
Mr. Matsudaira’s every word carries weight, and his acting gives a sense of his long history of playing Yoshimune. I am trying my best to keep up with this.

Q: This is your first time showing off your topknot. How do you feel about it?
This is my first time appearing in a historical drama wearing a habutae (the cloth that serves as the base for a wig). At first, it was difficult to adjust the eyebrows, and I had a hard time because I was sometimes warned not to raise my eyebrows. However, wearing habutae makes me feel calmer. Especially when shooting early in the morning, I feel like my eyes open up quickly, which is helpful.

Q: You have been involved in a unique sword fight in which you wield a Western sword with your left hand. How do you feel about it?
Ieshige fights with a Western sword called a rapier, but at first I was very nervous about whether he would be able to perform sword fights with his left hand instead of using his right hand. At that time, when I saw Matsudaira-san’s sword fight scene, it was so amazing that it was just as expected… I realized that I had to keep up, and since then I have been conscious of using my left hand in my life. I want to firmly show how Iedagi fights and the justice of Iedagi.

Q: This is your first meeting with director Takashi Miike, what is your impression of him?
I had seen many of Miike’s works, so I thought it was a great honor, but Miike’s works are violent and he’s a scary person, so at first I thought it looked scary (lol). However, when I talked to him, he was a very frank and soft-hearted person. I’m really grateful that he gave me a lot of useful advice on set, such as “I want you to look like this” and “I want you to look at me from this angle.”

Q: Please give a message to the viewers.
I’m glad to know that “Abarenbo Shogun” is such a flashy and interesting work and to be a part of it. Whether you’re seeing “Abarenbo Shogun” for the first time or you’ve been supporting it for a long time, I think it’s a work that you’ll enjoy, so please take a look.
