NHK’s music program “The Covers” is broadcasting the 11th cover special on General TV “100 years of broadcasting! Covers Masterpiece LIVE SP” will be broadcast from 10pm on January 16th.
With the coming “100th anniversary of broadcasting” in March 2025 just around the corner, this time, we will introduce famous performances that will be etched in the history of broadcasting, from the live performance at “Covers Fest”, a “festival of cover songs” that the program has delivered for 11 years. Introducing famous songs.
The contents of the “Masterpiece Cover Selection” (12 songs in total), which will be presented at the 11th year of Covers Fest, have been announced.
We will deliver plenty of famous songs that are part of the history of broadcasting, mainly from the 1970s to the 1980s.
From the 1970s, when a variety of music from popular songs to Japanese rock became popular, there was Koji Miyamoto’s “Igenjin” (Saki Kubota), Kiminori Sera & Twist’s “Gunzume”, and the golden age of TV music programs. From the 1980s, when the band boom was born, we aired shows such as Satoshi Terao’s “Ruby Ring” and BARBEE BOYS’ extremely rare live performances.
Artists associated with past “Covers Fest” will appear as talk guests. In 2024, Kiminori Sera, the man behind the spread of Japanese rock music on TV and in the living room, will appear on the “Winter Rock Festival” presented by Fukuyama City, Hiroshima Prefecture (broadcast on NHK BS from 10:30 p.m. on December 29th).
Their reunion at NHK Hall Fest in 2018 attracted a lot of attention, and Tomotaka Imamichi from BARBEE BOYS, who celebrated their 40th anniversary since their debut, and Kyoko, who is well-versed in covers of famous songs as a solo singer, made a rare appearance.
Then, Motohiro Hata, who appeared in “Covers Fest @ NHK Hall” in 2016 and 2020 and has covered many hit songs by Yumin, Yosui Inoue, etc., will appear.
Artists from across generations and genres gather in a “Meikyoku Cafe” style, and enjoy listening to famous songs and performances while discussing the history of Japanese music and its appeal.
Also, this day, January 16th, is “Cover’s Day”. Masaaki Sakai to MAGNETS, formed by Masaaki Sakai as his “last band in his life,” will make their first appearance on TV on NHK BS’s “Covers,” which will be broadcast from 9:30 p.m. Immediately after, “100 Years of Broadcasting!” will be broadcast on NHK General TV.
