Kumamon Square is the base of operations for Kumamon, the Sales Manager and Happiness Manager of Kumamoto Prefecture, who is now popular not only in Japan but all over the world. In response to the question, “Where can I meet Kumamon?”, it opened on the first floor of the Tetria Kumamoto Building in Chuo Ward, Kumamoto City in July 2013 as a facility to disseminate information on Kumamoto Prefecture’s products and tourism. In July 2023, it will celebrate its 10th anniversary and undergo a major renovation. It will be even more powerful with the introduction of Kumamon-related exhibits that can only be seen here and AR content.
The number of visitors is expected to reach 3.5 million by March 2024. It has become one of the most popular inbound spots in the prefecture, attracting many visitors not only from within Japan, but also from Asian countries such as China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Thailand, as well as from overseas.
Kumamon Square will celebrate its 11th anniversary in July 2024, and in order to celebrate this anniversary with Kumamon fans around the world, they have announced the holding of the “Kumamon Summer Festival.” Kumamon has been appointed as the executive committee chairman, and the key visual has also been released.
On the first day of the Kumamon Summer Festival on the 20th (Sat), Kumamon Square was decorated with lanterns and red and white curtains, and was packed with visitors from Japan and abroad. At 11:30, the start time of the event, Kumamon appeared wearing a red fundoshi costume and holding a large fan.
When the emcee announced once again that the museum had celebrated its 11th anniversary, the hall erupted in cheers.
At this point, Japanese drums appeared on stage. Kumamon held a drumstick in each hand and performed the special performance he had announced. When Kumamon’s original song “Kamon! Kumamon Ondo” began, the audience clapped along to Kumamon’s performance, and the “Kumamon Summer Festival” reached its climax.
At the end, Kumamon expressed his gratitude to his fans all over the world by performing Kumamon Square’s original dance, “Kumamon Square Theme – Fantasy Version.” The venue was filled with excitement, and the event ended with great success.
The “Kumamon Summer Festival” will be held at Kumamon Square for nine days from July 20th (Saturday) to July 28th (Sunday). Commemorative goods are on sale inside the building.
On Saturday, July 27th, the “Kumamon Square Stage” will be held at Amu Hiroba in front of Kumamoto Station.
They plan to perform “Kamon! Kumamon Ondo” with Japanese drums. Is the day approaching when this song will become a new standard song for Bon Odori?
