MTV, one of the world’s largest music and entertainment channels for youth, will announce the winners of the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards, held at UBS Arena in New York on Thursday, September 12th (Japan time).

The MTV Video Music Awards (VMA) is one of the largest music awards ceremonies in the United States, determining the best music videos and artists of the year. This year, the ceremony was held at the UBS Arena in New York, where many artists gave dazzling performances and celebrated with the audience.

Eminem opened the 2024 MTV VMAs. He performed “Houdini” and “Somebody Save Me” from his latest album, “The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce),” and got the crowd going. Then, MC (host) Megan The Stallion appeared on stage, further raising the excitement in the venue and declaring the start of the event.

BLACKPINK’s LISA, who made her first solo appearance on the stage, captivated the audience with her performances of her new songs “New Woman” and “ROCKSTAR”. She won the Best K-Pop Video Award. Katy Perry was introduced by presenter and longtime partner Orlando Bloom, who took the stage to perform a medley of her old hits and her new song “Lifetimes”, and won the Video Vanguard Award. In her moving speech, she spoke about the importance of staying true to yourself and mental health.

While the performances of artists who have become the faces of the music scene this year, such as Sabrina Carpenter and Chapel Lawn, excited the audience, Megan The Stallion’s performance featured surprise guest Yuki Chiba, who performed the collaborative song “Mamushi feat. Yuki Chiba,” which is currently a worldwide hit. This was the first time in history that a Japanese artist has performed on the stage of the VMA main show. In addition, Lenny Kravitz performed a powerful medley including “Are You Gonna Go My Way” on the VMA stage for the first time since 1998, and also performed a new song. Rapper Quavo also made a special appearance, and the venue was filled with excitement.

And finally, Taylor Swift won Video of the Year for the third consecutive year for “Fortnight,” which she produced with Post Malone. Taylor, who directed, produced, and wrote the video, closed the show by saying, “Making this video was an amazing experience, and I owe it all to everyone I worked with.”

MTV will broadcast the event with Japanese subtitles on Saturday, September 28th from 7:30pm. (Reruns available)
