“Asama International Photo Festival 2024 PHOTO MIYOTA” sponsored by LOEWE FOUNDATION is currently being held

LOEWE FOUNDATION is participating as a main sponsor of the Asama International Photo Festival 2024 PHOTO MIYOTA, which runs until Monday, September 16th (national holiday), and is holding an exhibition of the Onishi Seiemon family home.

In 2023, the LOEWE FOUNDATION announced a six-year funding program to support the Onishi Seiemon family and preserve the craft of chanoyugama for future generations, including through cultural initiatives.

This year’s photo exhibition at the “Asama International Photo Festival 2024 PHOTO MIYOTA” will shed light on the daily life of the Onishi family from the perspective of Seiemon’s wife, Eimi.

Photographer Osamu Yokonami, known for his serene works that explore anonymity and identity, photographed this series by getting close to the living space and private areas of the Onishi family home.

Intertwined with these works are portraits taken last year by Shun Omiyama and Kuniyuki Igarashi, as well as photographs of the workshop and tools. The exhibition is held at the Miyota Museum of Photography in MMoP, a complex at the foot of Mount Asama that was established as a place to enjoy food, clothing, shelter and diverse photographic expressions, and the works are in constant dialogue with nature.

The venue for the Asama International Photo Festival 2024 PHOTO MIYOTA, which will feature a variety of indoor and outdoor exhibitions, will be Miyota Town, Nagano Prefecture. The town, which is about 90 minutes away from Tokyo by Shinkansen, has seen many people with an interest in arts and crafts move here in recent years, and a community is forming that is exploring creative frontiers while breathing new life into traditional crafts.

About Osamu Yokonami
Through rhythmic repetition and sequence, Yokonami Osamu explores identity and cultural homogeneity. His series 100 Children, 1000 Children (both 2007-2014) and Assembly (2009-2023) explore the concept of the individual and the range of human emotion, suggesting that individual expression and assimilation into the community are essentially equivalent, yet reflective of each other. The related series Assembly Snow (2014-2019) takes this practice even further, where natural and cultural forces melt into the edge of abstraction. A recent project, After 1000 Children (2016-2021), sees him re-photograph the girls from 1000 Children, comparing them side-by-side with their younger versions.

LOEWE AND CULTURE
Culture is at the heart of Loewe. Fashion’s deep connection to contemporary life and its emphasis on art, design and craftsmanship have been cornerstones of the brand since Jonathan Anderson took over as Creative Director in 2013. Cultural projects, including collaborations with numerous artists and artisans, not only reinterpret and expand the brand’s values, but also reflect the same shared knowledge and collaborative spirit that has characterized the brand since its founding.
