A live report has arrived from Yuuka’s two-man concert with Orisaka Yuta, held at Shibuya WWW X on June 21st!

A live report has arrived from singer-songwriter Yuuka’s two-man live show “In Other Words,” held on June 21st at Shibuya WWW X with Orisaka Yuta (band).

Singer-songwriter Yuuka’s planned live show “In Other Words” was held on June 21st at Shibuya WWW X. The performers were Yuuka with Magic Band and Orisaka Yuta (band). A special stage unfolded, where the words and melodies of Yuuka and Orisaka, and the rich and profound ensemble of the band intersected.

First up was Orisaka Yuta (band). Together with band members Senoo Ricky (drums), Miyata Azumi (double bass), and Yamauchi Kota (electric guitar), he started the live performance with “Spring”. The phrase “I’m not sure, but it might be spring” spreads along with a calm and earnest melody. The contrast between the 5-beat rhythm and the relaxed, floating singing voice is beautiful. Next was the 6/8-beat “Spell”. This song starts quietly and gradually gains in uplifting energy, succinctly showing Orisaka’s current state.

“When we do a two-man concert, it clashes with the other song and I feel like ‘it has to be like this’. It’s a great song, but I want to do my best too! That’s how it is. Today, I’m going to play my best because I get to do it with Yuuka-san, and I think of it as a reward.”

Following those words, he performed a new song from his new album, “Jumon,” just like “Spell.” “Yokagi” evokes a fragrant nighttime scene, while “Nagi,” which centers around Orisaka’s guitar riff, takes on a minimal techno feel in the second half. These two songs conveyed the freedom and breadth of his musical world.

Afterwards, there were many scenes where we could experience Yuta Orisaka’s colorful music. “Douyou” has a glittering sound image centered around a bossa nova groove, and “Needle’s Hole” features distorted guitar sounds and a solid beat, with the singer singing “What I’m singing now is like threading a needle’s eye.” Then, in “NuNu,” the lively beat, effective electric guitar, and soulful singing voice intertwine, and the audience begins to sway their bodies with pleasure. “Sabisa,” in which Orisaka plays the mandolin and sings a dramatic song in a folky setting, also left a strong impression.

The last song was “Hachisu” from the album “Jun”. The sound was reminiscent of the new soul of the 70s, and the lyrics were filled with feelings about this era, enveloping the venue. In particular, the phrases “I think I like the world you are in, in a wind that is different from the old days” and “If I had to wish for anything, it would be to protect all the children” must have been firmly engraved in the hearts of all the audience members.

Next up was Yuuga with Magic Band. Yuuga appeared on stage after Takuro Okada (guitar), Hiroki Chiba (bass), Yu Taniguchi (keyboard), and Junpei Kamiya (drums), and spun the line “If I walk down a road wet with rain” with the sound of electric piano, instantly painting the venue in chic colors. The opening song was “June”. The audience started to sway to the band sound that felt the humidity perfect for this season. They then performed “Night Becomes Night”, a song that blends a sound image reflecting the taste of minimal funk with a melancholy melody. After introducing the band members and greeting “Yuuga with Magic Band”, they moved on to the new song “Sunset” that was just released. This song, co-written by Yuuga and Okada, is a chill song that connects folk and hip hop. The lyrics, which depict the evening and express the feeling of “I don’t want to stay like this, I wish I could stay like this”, are also impressive.

“Yuta Orisaka, I was watching from the back too. I feel like I’m thankful that you were born on this earth. Please enjoy until the end,” he said in “fifteen,” a medium tune with a strong blues tone. “Summer Window” conveys a sense of transience like a mirage. “Letter” depicts the absence of “you” in an ambience-like sound, and “WATER” begins with a chorus that gives a pleasant swaying feeling, followed by a calm and powerful melody.

Of particular note is Yuuka’s singing. Her vocals, which naturally reflect the subtleties of emotion while resonating with the band ensemble that incorporates the essence of modern R&B, folk, and soul, have become even deeper. Her physical expressions, including her rhythm and her small gestures, express the worldview of the song and are also fascinating.

Unreleased songs were also a major highlight of the live performance that day. “Kaori” is centered around a simple guitar riff, but the scent of the song slowly changes over time, and “Don’t Remember Me” is a natural blend of reggae and soul. Both can be said to be new trends for her.

The main part of the album ends with “Distant Morning,” which combines a refreshing summer groove with sad emotions, and the classic “Magic,” which features the line, “The magic with you disappeared that night.”

Responding to the never-ending applause, Yuuga appeared on stage alone. Then she called out Orisaka Yuta. “In Other Words, I sing about the world in my own words, and Orisaka paints the world in his own words. We sing in different words, but I felt that we live in the same world,” Yuuga said, before performing “Tomosaka.” Yuuga’s acoustic guitar and the sight of Yuuga and Orisaka singing together symbolized the greatness of this concert.

The new album “Love Deluxe” will be released on September 4th. In addition, the “Love Deluxe Tour 2024” will be held in Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka to promote this album. Please keep an eye on Yuuka, who is trying to make further leaps in both musicality and stage performance.
