On June 29th and 30th, 2024, in between the late-onset rainy season, the “Revo’s Orchestra Concert” was held.
This is one of the events commemorating the 20th anniversary of the major debut of Sound Horizon, a label led by sound creator Revo, in 2024. However, this event will feature not only Sound Horizon but also songs under the name Linked Horizon, and will feature orchestral arrangements of songs that Revo has created so far, supervised by himself, and performed live by a full orchestra. The performance will be by the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra. The conductor is Hirofumi Kurita. The two have captivated many fans with concerts that orchestrate contemporary music, such as the “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba” orchestra concert, the “FINAL FANTASY XIV ORCHESTRA CONCERT 2022 -Eorzean Symphony-” and the “Galaxy Express 999” cinema concert, as well as numerous classical music concerts.
Sound Horizon is known for its unique musical style, but this orchestra concert was a two-night event that showed Revo’s talent as a composer and his pride as an entertainer. Let’s take a look back at the first day, the day and night performances on June 29th, to see how Revo prepared a fun time to enjoy the high-quality music he has prepared for us.
[Revo’s skill in delivering quality music and turning it into a fun time]
The performances of “Revo’s Orchestra Concert” (hereinafter “ROC”) were held for a total of four performances, two in the day and two in the evening, on two days each. The venue was the Showa Women’s University Hitomi Memorial Hall, which is renowned for its acoustics. Each performance was further divided into two parts. The first part was a pure orchestra concert, and the opening song was “Overture to Hope” (“BRAVELY DEFAULT”), a song that reminded me of a classic RPG that is suitable for orchestration. However, from there, through early songs such as “Chronicle 2nd” from the indie era album, the performance moved on to songs that he created in the major scene, including songs he provided for Momoiro Clover Z and the anime “Attack on Titan”, giving a sense of the timeline of Revo’s work. In the MC, Revo said, “Even one-hit wonders have a history,” and in fact, compared to the early days when there were many short fantastical and mysterious songs, as the performance time approached the present day, the songs had become longer and more varied in structure, like classical music. At the same time, you’ll notice that the melodies have become more pop, and you can sense Revo’s evolution and direction as a composer, which is one of the charms of a vocal-less album.
Of course, the vocals in the original song have been replaced with various instruments such as flutes, violins, and harps, and the arrangement is so skillful that even those who know the original song can’t help but smile when they hear it. Among the well-known songs are “Requiem of the Dawn,” which takes the opposite approach of expressing the crazy soprano with a majestic horn, but is still as majestic as ever, and “Moon Pride,” which, in addition to the classic approach of assigning vocal solos to each instrument, also includes castanet triplets reminiscent of the floor tom from “Moonlight Legend.” The playfulness and love that goes into the songs provides countless joy to listeners.
An example of playfulness is “Song of the Dawn.” The original song had the sound effect of a book closing at the end of the song, starting with the line “Mutti, light, it’s warm,” but everyone on stage turned over the pages of their scores at once, and ended the piece with that sound. Moreover, the conductor and performers had their instructions written on their scores. This device was reminiscent of the famous “Concerto for Timpani and Orchestra” by Mauricio Kagel, which has a note at the end of the score that says the percussionist should dive headfirst into the timpani. In “Myth -Μυθοs-,” the birds’ chirps were expressed with bird calls, and in “schwarzweiß -A world connected beyond the fog-,” the wind sounds were expressed with wind machines. Both of these are sometimes used in classical music concerts, opening the door to classical music while entertaining the ears.
After the first part ended, there was a talk corner which also served as a break between the conductor and the orchestra, during which Revo had a detailed exchange with “Laurent” (a Sound Horizon enthusiast). Afterwards, the performance moved on to the second part, where a familiar vocalist appeared as a guest and Revo also joined in to perform vocal pieces.
The guest for the afternoon performance on the 29th was RIKKI. In the original version, RIKKI and Revo performed “Ishidatami no Scarlet Akuma” (Scarlet Devil on the Cobbled Street), which was sung by four female and male vocalists. Revo even showed off his skill by instantly switching between falsetto and natural voice. Similarly, in the original version of “11-character Message” sung by RIKKI, her vocals have become more maternal over the 17 years since then, and she will perform it on the stage of a symphony orchestra, which will stir up emotions.
The guest vocalist for the evening performance was Fuki. He performed a number of stunning songs, including one in “Star Dust,” which includes the line “Why?”, at which point he asks the question to conductor Kurita. In fact, this was an ad-lib at Revo’s instruction. Kurita skillfully responded, “That’s what I want to know. Why?”, but it was touching to see Revo’s entertainment spirit, which holds that a live performance should be free-spirited. At the end, he recreated the sound of a gunshot using a competition pistol, bringing smiles to the faces of the audience who knew the original song.
Even during the encore, he asked the audience, “Has anyone ever sang with an orchestra?”, setting up an opportunity for the entire venue to sing together in unison. From start to finish, the high-quality music tickled the ears, while the gimmicks prepared both inside and outside the songs eased the minds of the tense listeners. Kurita also encouraged the audience to clap so hard that the color of their palms changed, encouraging them to express their emotions honestly, and one could sense the spirit of Revo, a seeker of the arts. No matter what you look at from the two performances, it was a day in which you could admire the ingenuity of the creator known as Revo.
