South Penguin｜3rd Album「South Penguin」

South Penguin releases their first album in two years, “South Penguin.”
The work, which uses the group’s name as the title, is a culmination of their recent fulfilling activities.

“South Penguin” is South Penguin’s first album in two years, following “Y” released in 2019 and “R” released in 2022.
This work is a culmination of the band’s recent fulfilling activities, with Takuro Okada continuing as producer.

“Animal Planet,” the first single from the album, is cool, boogie dance music influenced by new wave/post-punk.
In addition to the sound centered around a powerful three-piece band that starts with a thick bass, the mellow “metro” also has a trendy side with the lyrics mentioning “Double Asano.”
The next song, “dance,” is a mellow, slow chill pop song. “Empty” starts with a unique guitar intro and features a light rhythm.
“Kani” is a heartwarming song full of songfulness that was created in 5 minutes on the streets of Okachimachi. “Business” is dance music with minimalist elements like techno that was inspired by “Money Tigers”.
“Tiger” is a thrilling track that combines a strong funk guitar/saxophone sound with progressive rock. “Teardrop” is the heaviest track on the album, featuring dynamic and distinctive riffs and a freaky solo.
“Actress” has a beautiful melody and a three-beat song that is rare for South Penguin. And “Suki Suki Daisuki” is a good song that is suitable to be the last song of the album.

South Penguin “R”

A psychedelic utopia where the band’s diverse and sometimes powerful music intersects with whisperingly delicate vocals.
Produced by Takuro Okada. Botsu aka NGS and Dos Monos make guest appearances.

While the music evokes edgy keywords such as post-punk, free jazz, Latin, and new wave, much of Akatsuka’s songwriting is so pop that it is sometimes reminiscent of popular songs, which is one of South Penguin’s distinctive charms.
The potential of the highly skilled supporting band members explodes in “R.” Sometimes beautiful, sometimes aggressive or tricky, each song shows a different expression, and Akatsuka’s whispering, delicate vocals intersect in this powerful work.

The first track, “vitamin,” is a math rock/prog song that gives a sense of South Penguin’s new era, fitting for the opening of “R.” It features high-tension rap by .aka. NGS (Dos Monos) and freaky no-wave saxophone. The next track, “thinker,” is a complete change of pace, with catchy guitar riffs and complex jazz-like rhythms and bass. “fancy” is a romantic song with Akatsuka’s whisper-like vocals at full throttle. “luv revolution” is the slowest track on the album, and you can enjoy Akatsuka’s psychedelic vocals. The next track, “gadja,” is a powerful song where Latin, new wave, and Afro-funk create a chemical reaction with Dos Monos’ rap. “night walker” is a mid-tempo number with floating guitars. And the last track, “nt,” is the only instrumental on “R,” and is a beautiful yet melancholic piano/guitar that blends beautifully with tight rhythms.

South Penguin

Formed in Tokyo in July 2014.
She debuted in 2016 with the EP “alaska”.
In June 2017, after their first overseas live performance in Taiwan, all members except Akatsuka left the band, and they continued to work with support members.
In 2017, they released their second EP “house”. In 2018, they toured China, including the Taihu Midi Festival.
In 2019, they toured Taiwan, including the Taiwanese festival “WAKE UP FESTIVAL 2019.”
In August 2019, they released their first album “Y”, in June 2020 the 7-inch album “bubbles/mad love”, and in March 2022 their latest album “R”.
In August 2021, they performed at FUJI ROCK FESTIVAL for the second time.
