Alternative rock legends The Smashing Pumpkins return to their roots with new album, “Aghori Mhori Mei”

The Smashing Pumpkins, the two-time Grammy-winning alternative rock legend, have released their new album, Aghori Mhori Mei. Their 13th album features original members Jimmy Chamberlin, James Iha, and Billy Corgan. The band’s intense and rich sound is back, dominated by guitars, bass, drums, and cutting vocals. The new album, reminiscent of their early 90s, is a testament to frontman Billy Corgan’s prolific output over the past decade.

Last year, the band released the third and final act of their epic, adventurous rock opera, ATUM, a sequel to 1995’s Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness and 2000’s Machina / The Machine Of God. Immediately after finishing the highly acclaimed and ambitious triple album, Corgan immediately went back into the studio to write, produce and record the 10-track album. Prolific in his creative endeavors, he declared that a new album would be released in 2024, and true to his promise, the band completed recording their new album, Aghori Mhori Mei, in the company of an extensive tour.

“In writing the songs for the new album, I was intrigued by the old adage, ‘You can never go home again,'” Corgan says. “Personally I believe that’s true, but I thought, ‘What if we just tried?’ Not as a sentimental look back at the past, but as a way of moving forward. We were trying to determine, with success or failure, whether the way we made music circa 1990-1996 still clearly inspires us today.”

The band will accompany Green Day on part of their North American stadium tour of “The Saviors Tour,” and will also perform solo arena shows and festival appearances until September. They also plan to tour South America in the fall. Kiki Wong will join them as the new guitarist for the live shows.

“We’ve been playing this rock ‘n’ roll game for 36 years. We’ve had to let other people decide in that split second what the first song should be, what the first statement should be. We felt the right way to listen to this album was as a complete body of work. Ten songs, about 45 minutes. What we’ve accomplished is what we set out to do, whether we’ve got it back to where we started. We want our fans to decide if this album has allowed us to come home again.”

“It feels good. Standing on stage and playing with the original band members feels natural, like riding a bike. It’s a good reincarnation of the band and we’re still full of power and energy. I think we’ve always been different to other bands, the songs Billy writes and the way the band plays. The dynamics of the songs, heavy, quiet and everything in between, we cover a lot of styles and have a unique sound.”

“I think culture is moving towards analogue experiences. We’ve had enough of the digitalisation of life and young people are craving more and more analogue, visceral experiences every day. They want to feel human again. It’s a very exciting time. We’ve been working together for over 30 years but we’re all very different people and it’s our differences and inconsistencies that make the music exciting. We all have very strong personalities. That’s a strong point and we want to do everything we can to demonstrate that musically and culturally.”

ABOUT THE SMASHING PUMPKINS

When Smashing Pumpkins first appeared in 1988, the world was astonished by their sound when they first heard it. They covered genres such as rock, pop, shoegaze, metal, goth, psyche, and electronic music, creating a kaleidoscope of sound with sweet melodies, distorted distortion, dramatic orchestras, inciting guitars, rich songwriting ability, and solid hooks. From the beginning, they played a unique and innovative sound, and that hasn’t changed even now. To date, they have sold more than 30 million albums worldwide and won two Grammy Awards, two MTV Video Music Awards, and an American Music Award. They have built a glorious history with albums such as “Gish” (1991) certified as 1 million platinum discs, “Siamese Dream” (1993) certified as 4 million platinum discs, “Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness” (1995) certified as 10 million diamond discs, “Adore” (1998) certified as 1 million platinum discs, and “Machina / The Machine Of Gold” (2000) certified as 500,000 gold discs. In 2018, they held one of their most successful tours, “The Shiny And Oh So Bright Tour”, and released the album “Shiny And Oh So Bright, Vol. 1 / LP: No Past. No Future. No Sun.” In 2020, they released their previous album “Cyr”, a double disc set that will be their 11th full-length album. In 2023, they released their 12th new album, “ATUM: A Rock Opera In Three Acts,” consisting of three acts. And now, on August 2, 2024, they will release their 13th new album, “Aghori Mhori Mei.” The lineup of original members Billy Corgan, Jimmy Chamberlin, and James Iha overwhelms with their sound reminiscent of the early 90s, making full use of guitar, bass, drums, and sharp, cutting vocals.
