Bruce Springsteen, the “boss” of the American rock world, has covered “She Don’t Love Me Now” by former Heart Attack/D Generation rock singer Jesse Malin. On September 20th, a tribute and benefit album “Silver Patron Saints: The Songs Of Jesse Malin” will be released, featuring covers of Jesse’s songs by various artists, including the song. All proceeds from the album will be donated to Malin’s “Sweet Relief Artist Fund.”

“When we recorded the original, Bruce gave it that Stax soul thing that we were longing for, which to me is just surreal,” says Marin. The original was recorded for his 2015 album, New York Before the War. The 2024 cover features Springsteen backed by Jesse’s band and Jake Clemons on sax.

“Bruce’s generosity, honesty and support are as powerful as his songwriting and performances,” says Mullin. In 2007, Springsteen performed a duet with Mullin on “Broken Radio,” a song Mullin wrote for his late mother. “Bruce is a man’s man. He walks the way he talks. When you’re with him, you feel like you’ve known him for years. He’s like my friend from Queens, sitting around talking about Sinatra, The Clash and The Pogues. He has a passion and excitement for life.”

Marin continues, “While I was recovering in a hospital in Argentina, I never would have imagined that my friends and the producers of this album would reach out to so many incredible artists to create covers of my songs. Hearing these covers, especially ‘She Don’t Love Me Now’, lifted me out of a dark period. Through the unique power of music, I felt excited about life again.”

In May 2023, Marin suffered a rare spinal cord stroke that left him paralyzed from the waist down. Recently, he shared a video update on Instagram. “As always, my songs have themes of transcendence, aspiration, and bringing the world together through music,” Marin said. “This is what I love, and I’m going to do everything I can to keep doing it.”

Having collaborated with others over the years, Marin is grateful for all the musicians who have come together to support him: Bruce Springsteen, Billie Joe Armstrong, Lucinda Williams and Elvis Costello, The Hold Steady, Tommy Stinson, Alison Mosshart (The Kills) and the late Ween Kramer, Tom Morello, Counting Crows, Dinosaur Jr., The Wallflowers, Spoon, Susanna Hoffs, Frank Turner, Rancid, and many more.

This December, Marine will return to the stage at the Beacon Theater, performing the biggest New York show of her career.

The two nights will feature Jesse and his band performing a full set, followed by appearances on each night by Lucinda Williams, Jacob Dylan, Butch Walker, J Mascis, Adam Duritz and David Immey of Counting Crows, The Hold Steady, Alejandro Escobedo, and more guests to be announced at a later date.

Rock journalist David Flick said, “Jesse Malin knows about scars. He’s been observing and looking at them since he was young. Every scar tells a story, and he’s sure he has more to tell. Silver Patron Saints is an album of his friends returning to his rock ‘n’ roll bar, taking the stage and toasting to this songwriter and the story he’s told.”
